Airbag light on too? Clock spring sounds like the culprit.

So I searched but didn't see anyone having the same issue.
The other day i turn my car on and I can not control the radio using the steering controls. I also notice that the paddle shifters no longer work, and either does my horn.
Seems like there is no power going to the steering column.
The turn signals and wipers work though. Is there a fuse for this? Or has anyone seen this before?

Yes, I get an air bag fault light also. What is the clock spring and how do i fix it?
Sorry I had never dealt with that piece before.
EDIT: Found the piece online. How hard is it to replace?

Def clockspring. Disconnect the battery. Put key in the ignition. Turn steering wheel 90 degrees to one side, unclip airbag, turn to other and do the same. Pull airbag off. Using a m12 triple square take the bolt out. Pull steering wheel off. Take the steering column cover off. Carefully remove and replace clockspring. Reinstall everything.
Edit: Use this for removal instructions....

Thank you very much. That looks a little involved for me and I would hate to set off the airbags. Or connect something incorrectly. Might take it somewhere for an estimate

Its really really easy. Just make sure you pull the battery and press the brakes to discharge any stored juice. After that you are golden.

This is why people need the car they have in their info. What year do you have, under warranty?

I would let a body shop or dealer do it. A clock spring is nothing to screw around with if you dont know what your doing, you can get hurt.
My other other car has 2,000HP per axle.

It's really not that serious. I just retrofitted a mk5 wheel into my mk4. That requires splicing both harnesses together. Unless you aren't mechanically inclined, then yes take it somewhere.

Seem easy to break too. Dealer installed one, cleared the codes. Broke the next time I started the car.

Sorry I had never dealt with that piece before.

Sorry I should have included I have a 2007 VW GTI, 4 door. Definitely not under warranty, 77k on it

this is impossible to do with the battery not connected if there is no power here is nothing that can set them off
i dont know why people think this airbags are pretty simple things they can't just go off for no reason
it is involved but its not hard to change the clock spring
