Thread: My car will not start! Help a fellow vw bro out

  1. 06-12-2012 10:59 PM #1
2001 Jetta VR6 has an EPC , check engine, and a circle with 3 dashes on each side. What I have replaced: coil pack, plugs and wires, starter, starter wire, and brake switch, hazard relay switch and the car will not start. When turning the key all the dash does is freaks out trying to start and goes blank while making a clicking noise. Also it is a 5 speed 2.8l 12v. What is going on?

I realize this sounds a little basic, but those symptoms usually spell a weak/dead battery. Have you boosted it? And is this an out of the blue issue, or is this after completing some repairs?

My 2.9L BVH build and the machine shop #%@- up that almost ruined it all.

Umm it's not boosted and have had the battery bench tested and it was fine. I was driving and my car just died out completely and ever since then has not worked at all. I had a guy come out to my house and run a vag com and it read nothing which I do not understand.

Lol... not boosted as in turbo'd.... I mean boosted as in with a good battery or car with booster cables. Otherwise it sounds like you may have a problem with the power supply to the ECU. That may explain why the vag-com didn't read anything. Do you remember if it was able to communicate with the ECU...?

    Possibly alternator?

^x2 I've tested batteries with the best of equipment and it doesn't always get it right. Have you tried jumper cables? Or maybe even a different battery? Might as well rule out the simplest possibility first.

I have switched out between three batteries and tried jumping it with numerous vehicles. Alternator! Hmm I've thought that but was not sure

I have seen on a couple different places that an epc problem could amount out to a bad mass air flow sensor too? What's the like lability

If you've tried other batteries then it probably isn't the alternator, it just made sense because your car died then wouldn't restart.

You could always pop off the alternator and have autozone test it for you (free of charge). Although its not quite as easy as "popping it off" . As for the EPC MAF question, when my MAF went all I got was a CEL but I have heard other people say they've gotten EPC with a bad MAF. But a bad MAF wouldn't prevent your car from starting. Oh and I didn't even have to replace my MAF. I just bought some $6.00 MAF cleaner from autozone and soaked it in it and it worked like a charm. Took away my CEL and any DIAG Codes.

Idk if you've tried a scan tool a vag-com would be ideal but I've been able to diagnose my car in a pinch with cheap autozone scanners, go rent one and plug it in write down all the codes an post then up, at least that way you have some sort of direction..

Do I need a 90 or 120 amp alternator if I were to need one?

By the way I get all my parts from rock auto and it is a lifesaver on low budget.

either one will work, but the 120amp is recommended for Vr6 models. Heres a DIY of removing it http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...-MK-IV-12v-VR6

    Like I said, PITA

Also now, has a noise almost like a fan or high pitched ringing noise in the engine compartment! My car is a mess and I miss it. What the hell could it be?

So it runs now but is making noise. Pull the serp belt start it up. If the sounds gone it'll be an accessory like power steering on idler bearing. If it sounds like a charger it's prob the ps pump. Mine makes a racket but that's torque steer for ya.
    Forced convection.... Now we grillin.
