Hey guys i newly bought a 1987 Audi 4000cs quattro. The car is tornado red with 139,000 miles. Everything works, and is pretty clean thoroughout. The only thing is this idle problem. The car starts up and runs, but runs rough and when given gas, it cuts out. I am looking into a fuel filter first. The car runs so its not the fuel pump. Possibly clogged injectors???? Worst case scenario is i need to rebuild, clean or replace the fuel distributor, hopefully no tho.... Any ideas or suggestions would help. Also this is my first audi that i have bought( mom owned many and driven most of hers), what should i look for as to things to go wrong or break at this point in time? Thanks everyone. Will post pics soon!

Look for Vacuum leaks as there should be a few, if not many, also try cleaning the idle "De"stabilization valve (sic). also just make sure the plunger in the underside of the fuel distributor is free and clean. Was it being driven or had it been sitting for awhile as its critical that these get driven....

hey ok thanks i will look for leaks. Um as far as i know, the kid drove it with the cv joint broke for a while in 4wd, then he ran into his house one day and the car just cut out. Then i believe he said that it sat a month or so, but he claimed he started it once every week to keep things moving.

    Hello,
My name is Joe, bought a 86 4000CS Quattro last week and so far so good, it unfortunately didn't have any records with it and the odometer stopped at 136K. really have no idea of the mileage.
Seems to run really well, with a little rough idle at start up, but generally idles fast at about 1500 RPM??? Do you have any suggestions for the power windows in these cars? Mine dont work and I understand this is a common problem with these cars. Is it normally the switch or the motors, wiring or all the above? thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
    Joe

I would look for vacuum leaks. Mine is hard to start when it's cold and idles funny. The differential lock doesn't work and I can hear a leak behind the switch as well as by the rear of the car. My power door locks also don't work which I believe is controlled by vacuum.

I think it's a switch problem with my windows. The fronts work fine. The rears don't work from the front but do from the back. I got one back window to roll down with the front switch but couldn't get it to go back up. If none of them work at all from any switch I would check fuses for power to the switches/motors.

Thanks for the suggestions, I pulled the pass. driver window switch and replaced it with one I had save from a while back and EUREKA!! It works now. back windows are still not operational as well as the sunroof. Going to check and replace all fuses.

It would not hurt to "seafoam" the intake and clean out the idle air control valve.
