Thread: Sooo Need car buying advice... Audi A4 vs A5...

  1. 06-15-2012 09:54 PM #1
    Hey Guys....

I am in a bit of debate...

I have two car choices at the moment to buy, both used...

Audi A5 2010 2.0t Quattro Stronic fully loaded 16k miles...

    or

Audi A4 2011 2.0t Quattro Stronic fully loaded as well except for backup sensors and electric rear shade 10k miles...

I don't need the two extra doors of the A4... but I like how the A4 is more discrete than the A5... I of course love the A5 lines but there is a price difference of about 5k more for it...

I think they are the same exact car underneath right? Of course I would go with the car that has better driving dynamics but I think they should be the same... Any 10 vs 11 differences that I should be aware of?

So what would you guys do? Like I said I don't need the two doors... its more of getting almost the same car one year older dilemma for more money, and what differences will the car bring...

    Let me know!
    J

This comes down to a looks preference because aside from that they are pretty much identical. That being said, given the option, I'd take the a5 all day everyday over the a4.

other reasons: rich daddy's girls in highschool and rich daddy's girls in sororities.

I don't understand... how is the sedan more discrete than the coupe? They are functionally the same car with minor visual differences.

^ to people who understand and know cars yes. To the average joe on the street a low slung sports coupe looks like a damn ferrari compared to anything with 4 doors.

Think back to when you were a tiny kid, did you ever assume things with 2 doors were faster than things with 4 doors because they were "sports cars" I know i did and it's basically the same premise.

This is a no brainer ... the only thing that separates these two cars is practicality. 4 Doors = more practical, 2 doors = less practical. Are you really going to need those extra 2 doors? If it were me I would choose the A5 because it's a lot less common on the streets.

Everyone has an A4, do you want to blend in? If you do, get an A4.

Get the A5 and be the envy of some of your neighbors. If you want a car that will blend in then you shouldn't be shopping for Audi's and should head more into the Camry direction

A5 = 2 less door lock actuators and window regulators to replace

Are there any differences in the interior or driving dynamics of the car a4 vs a5?

In my useless opinion, the A5 is the prettiest car Audi has ever made.

    This.

I see so many A4's and 90% of them are black. What colors are they?

    I say A5.

Definitely not. My mom drove a 1982 Mitsubishi Cordia coupe that could barely make it up hills and would cut off at stop lights randomly. The idea of 2 doors equaling sporty was quickly removed from my mind.

Similarly equipped, and similar age - should there really be a significant price difference between them?

2-doors can be difficult to open in tight parking spots (as we have many here) or for old & frail passengers. Other than that, if you don't need 4 doors: the A5 looks awesome compared to the much more mundane A4. Also, I would much rather have young & fit passengers - especially if I were single...

A5 would be my choice. You do not see as many on the road compared to the A4.

If you can swing the extra $5K with no issues, then absolutely the A5. It's a beautiful car.

the A4 is a great car but I agree, it is so friggin' austere looking, it makes me wonder why Audi decided to make such a quiet design. Hopefully the next A4 is a lot more bold.

    I see at least a dozen A5s a day.

That being said, A5 all day long.

Hard to pick between those 2 but if you don't need 4 doors get the A5.

I love my A4 and it garners its share compliments etc... but had I been able to afford one, I would have gotten an A5. That being said, having four doors has come in very handy many, many times. My $0.02

I'm 24 and bought an A4 last year. Could have gotten the A5 as well. Great looking car but I preferred the A4. It's paid off so I think that increases my happiness with it but I regret getting it in black because of it always looking dirty and being hot.

I had it lowered but that was a mistake. It's now back on stock springs but I kept the wheel spacers on. They actually make a big difference with the look of the car. I say pick whatever looks best to you. Basically the same car.

GUYS... are there any technical aspects that separate this two cars? suspension, drivetrain, weight, seating position?

The only thing that I know is different is the manual transmission. The A4 is a basic unit, still 6 speeds, but the A5 gets the sport trans.

You can look up the specs yourself; they ride on the same platform and use the same drivetrains. As for driving position, the A5 is slightly lower.

I know I'm in the minority but the only A5 that I really like is the Cabriolet...I think the A4 is the better looking car if you're looking at a tin top.
