Thread: Mounting rear seats

  1. 06-17-2012 08:41 PM #1
Putting a 72 Beetle back together. When I bought it, the seats were already unbolted in the back. I've got new covers on them, and trying to get them back in.

But the back rest doesn't want to line up with the bolt on the bottom and fit right. When I bolt them in, the stoppers on top don't line up with that rod that turns on top to keep it in place, and the bottom seat doesn't want to slide in. When I just set the seat in with the bottom in place, the hole to mount them is about a inch and half off.

Is there supposed to be some kind of bracket or mount on this to have it line up? Thanks for any help.

    Dayo two ,
Sounds like you've got a mismatch of generations/applications goin' on there :

    from

The back seat seat back frames(#6)

up to the end of 1972 & from 1973 on were different as well as all convertible frames were from hardtops,so since you've already had them recovered what I'd do is line up the stoppers & latch the crossrod then devise some extensions from steel flatstock(welded to or bolted through the frame you have) to be able install the pivot bolts(#14) .
I've seen this done before but just can't find any mention of that specific fix right off the bat .
Other stuff I looked at toward that end :

Ok thanks. Then I'm not doing this wrong or going crazy. Lol

I asked the prev owner who took them apart, also has a 65 and 73. He said they all bolt straight in. So I was getting a bit worried I was doing this wrong, but I knew something wasn't making sense. I had the idea of just adding some material to the frame at bottom.

Already redoing the front seats, modding them from hi back 72's to low back 65ish. So I'm not worried about originality. Whole interior is converted to 60's era for that matter.

Thanks for the extra help Buggyman!!
