Thread: My GLI was KIA'd, help needed

  1. 06-20-2012 10:17 AM #1
My GLI's timing belt snapped while I was driving to work about two weeks ago and she's been dead in the water ever since. To make a long story short the Woodbridge Carmax said that when the belt snapped it messed/bent/****ed up a few things on/in engine assembly and that they have to replace the entire engine (a job that starts at $4,500.00).

I'm not a car guy and I have no knowledge of my car. I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to drop by the lot with me and take a quick look at it to see if what Carmax was saying held any water. I'm leaving for school in a few weeks and I have to sort this out asap. I'm strapped for cash but I can offer a small cash reward or a case (or two) of beer in exchange for this quick look over.

....i doubt the whole engine is 'toast' unless you were doing 100mph or faster when the belt broke

9/10 times you just need the head rebuild or a new on installed- and a new t-belt kit installed. Even with with the valve hitting the pistons the block should be fine. i have NEVER had to replaced a whole engine for a broken t-belt but once for ALH 1.9td that was doing 110mph when the belt broke and grenaded the motor when 3 valve heads broke off the stems.

If they are throwing out that the motor is dead and needs to be replaced i feel the are just trying to make more $$ off you or run you off. Take it to a 'real' VW shop or dealer. see what they say. I am fairly certain they will say u need a new/rebuild head and t-belt kit. ( again as long as you were not doing 100mph in 4th gear, than there is a chance it did take out a piston or worse-)
