Thread: Help: Fans don't come on after turning off car

  1. 06-20-2012 08:16 PM #1
    09 MKV GTI...

The other day I had to jump the car because my wife left the lights on. Previously I had noticed the fans were on when I turned the car off or would turn on for a few seconds.

Well during the jump I accidentally reversed pos/neg on the car I used to jump with. I only put the power to the GTI for 2 seconds the fans kicked on and I removed it I knew something wasn't right because a smell. I NEVER CRANKED THE GTI. I then realized I had pos/neg reversed on the other car... swapped them and cranked the GTI up.

My radio fuse was blown and Traction control light and steering wheel light were on. After 15 seconds of driving those lights went out but my radio still didnt work. Replaced the fuse and it worked.

So now I notice fans aren't coming on anymore when I turn the car off. They work fine with car on so I must have blew some sort of relay/switch idk. I checked all the fuses under the hood and they are good. Any idea???

Such a dumb mistake I feel embarrassed. The shop that did battery relocate on my other car removed the red and black caps so I just didn't realize.

Please help me out!!! I don't want to kill my wife's new car it only has 25k miles. (no warranty)

Do an output test via vag com and see if they work. If not check all the fuses and relays. Grab a Bentley Manual and it will tell you where they all are.

So your fans come on after you turn the car off? I posted in the passat b6 forum that after driving around 20 mi mine kick on for a couple minutes after I turn the car off. I do live in az with triple digit temps and scorching asphalt plus mixed city/highway driving. I was concerned cuz my sister's bf said his don't turn on(he has cc) but he rarely drives that far. Mine is 09 2.0t

ok......most often i let the car idle for about 45 seconds or before shutting off the car. Did this on my mkiv 1.8t because i read cooler oil is fed through the turbo

I know the OP got his issue fixed. However, is there a known set of conditions that make the fans stay on after turning the car off? My car hasn't been doing this for a few months now.

Edit: I have a VCDS cable and there are no faults
