Yukon XL brake pads & rotor cost...WOW

Seems high to me. RockAuto says ACDelco rotors are $58.79/ea for the front and $45.89/ea for the rear. Pads are about $40 per set.

The rotors are similarly priced to the ones for my Honda Odyssey on rockauto. Yes it's a full size SUV, but Chevy/GMC trucks are some of the most common cars on the road, the parts are generally cheap. The pads aren't priced unusually high either.

The labor rate should be low. The calipers are the standard sliding type based on the shape of the pads in the photos. The rotors are the floating type, the hubs don't have to come off to change them. It should be a totally standard brake job. If the shop is quoting you some sort of surcharge for trucks/SUVs, walk.

Yeah, DIY even changing all the little clips and springs and hardware would be around $200 per axle.

I'd expect an indy shop to be in the $700-$1000 range depending on their parts markup and the labor rates in your area. $1400 has gotta be dealer rates.

The garage must be including the replacement of the muffler bearings. Normally you don't have to replace those for a brake job.

You think that is expensive. Typical dealer quote for a Touareg is $1000 to $1200 for front brakes (pads/rotors) alone.

Ceramic front pads $26
Ceramic rear pads $36

Total cost $256 with tax.

Brake cleaner and pin lube $5

And two hours of your time and some

And if you go to Advanced or AutoZone, most of the pads have a lifetime warranty. So bring them back, get new ones...free.

Buy parts, find shady tree mechanic....two hours of labor at let's say $50-80 an hour. Should be able to find someone in Reno to do it cheap, hell probably could find someone to do it for a case of Busch and $20.

Is there another chevy dealer in town? Better yet maybe a fleet dealer? If not that then find a goodyear gemini tire shop, tires plus, discount tire any of the chain places.

GM uses ac delco stuff which is nearly the most readily accessible car equipment on the planet I'm sure one of those shops will be cheaper.

^^this dude, go buy all the parts have a indy shop do the work. Since its a really straight forward (easy) job you may have a friend that can knock it out in a couple hours, just buy him some and you're good.

Call Big-O-Tire. Ask them for a quote on a full brake job on a 2008 XL 1500 4wd. If you like the price, be sure to get a the name of the guy who quoted it and an appointment. If you don't like the price, continue to call around. A GM vehicle like this should be very straight forward for almost any shop. You aren't asking for a brake job on a Ferrari GT250 Berlinetta SWB afterall.

I called Big 0 and they were over a $1K too. I am kinda new to the area and don't have any mechanic friends..(ski deals..connections..a ton there ) But this IS our second vehicle and I think if get the parts together..I should be able to round someone up. It sucks..when I sold cars back east, I would always have a parts/mechanic guy to do work after hours. I need to expand my social circle out here.

Lots of qualified techs do side work on the weekends to supplement their income. Dont be afraid to ask for qualifications - spending a few extra dollars on a guy that appears to be the most qualified will probably give you peace of mind.

I browsed the ads a bit and this guy would be my first call - Gary the mobile mechanic

I honestly don't know your life situation, but why wouldn't you do it yourself? You can buy the tools and still save money. If its a second vehicle anyways, its no big deal if you mess something up.

i get this all the time. People call in for a ring and pinion on their early 00's F350 dually and are shocked it's going to be $500+. Just because you paid 10k for the truck doesn't mean it uses cheap parts. There is a reason the truck was so expensive new.
