By the way it has an injen short ram intake with a dry cone filter if that matters(only mod under the hood for now).

This morning I was driving down the highway, at about 65 mph, and noticed my check engine light come on. I decided to take an early lunch and pulled into a nearby wawa to scan it.

    001025 - EGR System
    P0401 - 001 - Insufficient Flow - MIL ON
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 11100001
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 2
    Mileage: 83790 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Date: 2013.14.28
    Time: 07:24:55

    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 2116 /min
    Speed: 126.0 km/h
    Voltage: 14.21 V
    Load: 73.7 %
    Load: 100.0 %
    Mass Air / Rev.: 370.0 mg/str
    Mass Air / Rev.: 375.0 mg/str

I cleared the code, and crossed my fingers that it would just be a fluke, but the check engine light came right back on after starting it again.

I got another P0401, and P2413 along with it. I didnt save the log that time(laptop battery died ), but the I believe the P2413 was for EGR performance malfunction or something light that.

After taking a look around online I noticed there were quite a few stories out there about EGR codes ending up with replacement of the DPF, EGR valve and other parts.

After calling around to a few dealers to try to gleam some information on the subject, I finally got somebody who was actually willing to pick up a book and answer the questions I was asking, and I was lucky that it was the closest one to my house. Turns out they actually had a car in for just that and the DPF was just replaced.

I was very concerned weather it would be warrantied for whatever repairs end up being needed.

One dealer told me that EGR was not covered under emissions warranty, and the DPF was covered untill 80 in the emissions warranty because it has a cat inside also. (It says in the warranty paperwork that DPF is covered to 120k)

The very helpful local dealer mentioned above also told me that because the car has a California emissions system on it, EGR is covered to 80k under the emissions warranty. Quite the technicality.

Its going into the dealer this week, as soon as I stuff the factory air box back in there so they don't give me sh!t

It's funny this happens now, because I was planning on removing the DPF in a month or 2 anyway.

So if for some reason I cannot get something warrantied and I get a big estimate, I will just remove the DPF, clean out the whole EGR system, and hope that no EGR parts need to be replaced.

    Any ideas guys?

its funny to see this come up, as my car is in the dealer for the same exact thing now, for the second time in a short period of time.. first time in march they replaced the whole DPF assembly and cleaned all EGR components including cooler, and valve. CEL came back a meer 500 miles later.. I just brought it back in as i have been away for work, and it has the same CEL. it currently in review by VW in level 3 support

The car is now at the dealer, and they just called me with their(vw tech line) diagnoses. I am past the 36k warranty btw.

They said the tech line told them to replace an O2 sensor(did not clarify which one), and that vw would pay for the part but I have to pay labor due to being out of warranty. She gave me a disclaimer and said that it may actually be the DPF, but they have to follow the tech line procedure in order to have VWAG warranty the DPF replacement. She also mentioned that the DPF may need to be replaced, because they suspect a problem with the oxidation cat, which is part of the DPF.

    Price of sensor: $185
Price of labor+tire rotation that I needed anyway: $177

I told them to go ahead with it due to the price of the sensor. They pulled the same thing when my throttle body needed replacement. Interesting pricing scheme for parts and labor.

What makes no sense to me is, why would an issue with the oxidation cat throw up an egr code? And if the O2 sensor was reading wrong, wouldnt I be getting some kind of O2 sensor or cat codes along with my egr code?

I don't see how they think replacing 1 O2 sensor is going to fix an EGR insufficient flow code?

They also said they are gonna replace the sensor, set readiness to see if the code returns, and if it returns, they will replace the DPF no charge.

I will update when I hear more from them.

If mark at malone or kyle at pde could weigh in on this, that would be great.

So I ended up getting the DPF replaced under warranty.

Here is the original work order for the O2 sensor replacement.

    P2

Now here is the one for the DPF replacement. The tech's notes at the bottom of the page tell you the most.

    P2

All in all, I am happy with it. I'm still waiting for one last monitor to become ready to confirm that they didn't screw anything up, then I will be installing my catback from PDE. They went completely by the tech line on this one and I had to pay labor on the O2 sensor because the car was over 36k.

Anytime, I figured VW isn't going to tell anyone sh!t so I had to do it for them. The service writer also mentioned there was another car in there with the same problem and solution that day.

Do you think I should bring this up to my dealer at all? I put my stock intake back on my car because I have been reading that mine was the reason for my p2413. I had my dealer replace my EGR valve and my light still comes on every 2 cycles from being cleared and don't know where to go from here.

Go back to the dealer over and over until they replace your dpf. Also, insist to them that you would like them to test drive the car enough to set readiness, and you don't mind paying for the fuel to do that. They can replace whatever they want, but if readiness isn't set before it leaves the dealer, the code will always come back once your monitors become ready. If my dealer had done that I wouldn't have been out $140 for an o2 sensor install because I could have said "obviously the o2 sensor didn't fix it, so why am I paying for it?".
