    Hello,
i have a 91' EA in California and recently i had to do the smog check,
needless to say was a pain in the ass, since it didnt pass.
But besides that, the place where i took it insisted that it needs to have a
check engine light and he marked a FAIL on the check engine light, but my car
doesnt even have a check engine light. Is nowhere on the Dashboard or in the Headlight's switch, doesnt even have a symbol anywhere.
So my question is, is this the way it supposed to be?
At the end i had to replace the cat converter and some other stuff and i even challenged the mechanic to find the Check Engine Light and he couldnt so at the end he had to bypass that part of the test.
I though my car had a check engine light since its a 91' and a California car but i guess not. Didnt notice this until now.

My 1992 doesn't have a check engine light as well.

from cabby-info: "Only Cabriolets equipped with Digifant I engines have the OBD I diagnostic port and check engine light."

Digifant I was installed only in Cabriolets initially sold in California beginning with the 1991 model year; all other Cabriolets use Digifant II.

If the 5th digit in the VIN is "B" it's Digifant II, if it's "C" it's Digifant I and should have a check engine light on the dash. You can also check the ECU itself for the part number and/or "Digifant II" printed on it.

"B" in the VIN + no check engine light = car wasn't initially sold in California.

Edit: Got the letter in the last sentence wrong.

    Hello,
    i finally have the pics.
here's the cluster with the key on:
    Photobucket
    Cluster with the key off:
    Photobucket
Headlight switch where obviously there is not check engine light there:
    Photobucket
Pic of computer where i couldnt find any info if it is digifant I or II:
    Photobucket
Finally i show you a pic of my registration so you can see the VIN #, it has a "B", so i guess its not a California car:

I took my car to 3 smog check places, 2 insisted the car needs to have a check engine light to pass smog, i explained them there is not check engine light. Last guy i convinced and challenged him to find the check engine light and even gave him some time to look on the books that he had and info and he couldnt say that the car has one, so he bypass that section.

5th letter in your vin is a B so that means your engine is a Digi 2.. assuming you have the original motor or one matching. Your dash lights are the same as mine. The middle one on the top row is just a black tab of plastic. The same with the 3 (?) on the bottom row.

Glad you found someone that let you bypass that silliness.

California... Shameful you had to go to three places to finally get somewhere.

Cluster is irrelevant; they are all the same from 1990-1993. If it's Digi I it will have a "C" as VIN digit #5 and will have this set-up for the brake/seat belts warning:

Good photo to have! I was pointing out that the spots where there are not lights are (mostly) places where there are no lens to let the light through.
