These things are tough to eradicate!

A family of mink found its way into my back yard. They have taken several of the fish out of my pond . So far, I have seen 2 adults and 3 young ones. My Schnauzer does a good job of keeping them at bay, but he can't guard the pond 24/7. As soon as he's inside, I see them come back out.

I have baited a couple of live traps with tuna, and they won't touch it. I have rat traps, and they stay away from those. I placed some food laced with rat poison under the deck (dog can't get at it), and they are not interested.

I borrowed a BB gun, and managed to ping them a few times. They scream, and scatter, but it's not enough. I live in a built up area, so a real weapon isn't allowed.
Would a high powered pellet gun work? I don't know much about them.

      Any other ideas? Help!

Do you know where their den is? My local hardware store had a hose you could attach to your car exhaust to eradicate Gophers

.22 bolt rifle and .22 CB short ammo. As quiet as your BB gun but deadly results.

I don't own a rifle, but have a friend who does...I might have to call him.
My uncle has a pellet gun that he says can kill a squirrel...I was thinking that might be an option, but I don't know much about them.

I have had raccoon problems before, and they are easy to take care of...Live trap + a "swim".
These things are nasty and fast. I almost smashed one with a rock, but he just escaped. Some of my big Koi are gone missing, but I haven't found a carcass yet.

See if you can get some sharp-point pellets. I took out a groundhog with sharp points and a Crossman pump action that probably moved things along at about 700 fps, although they were .22 and you are probably shooting .177. I still had to hit him a number of times before he died because apparently they have very thick skulls. It actually got pretty barbaric and it was all totally illegal to do here in "No"-Jersey. You can get very powerful .25 air rifles but they are a lot more pricey. But a mink is pretty small so .177 sharp points, if you can get them, might work if your gun has any power.

You could try one of those owl statues, or sacrifice a coi since you'll be buying more anyway, and try to bait your traps with what they want to eat.

Mink are pure killers. I had one get in my chicken coop and kill 14 of them in a couple minutes. Didn't take any with him.

I ended up finding the spot he dug under the fence, and put a leg trap. 15 minutes later he came back for chickens, but never made it in.

We have borrowed a high power pellet gun...we'll see how it goes. We have their most of the known trails blocked, and 2 open...hope to lure them in to the gauntlet.

They are quite effective on small vermin. I've taken down squirrels, rabbits, posum, and even groundhogs w/ mine. I need to get some more ammo though, as I will be using it on the liter of feral cats that have taken up residence in my yard.

      Possum trap?

Also, minks are nocturnal. Chances are they are doing their damage at night.

Update: Traps did not do the trick...a few more of my fish missing.

My Schnauzer sounded the alarm this morning, as he watched the mink coming back for more...but I was prepared. I bought a Remington air rifle at TSC.

Killed one of the "teens" at close range. I hit another as he ran, but I missed right. My new rifle isn't sighted properly yet.
I did hit the mother on her way out, I heard her yelp. I think I got her in the back leg, as she limped away. She slid down the creek bank and got away.

I forgot to take pics of the dead one before I buried him....not much to him, they are smaller than I thought.

Way to go, Rupert. Man's best friend.

You'd be correct . I made the huge mistake of playing on the internet before my second cup of coffee had turned on all the switches. Furrier it is .

Print a poster size version of this and caption it "You're next..." i'm sure they'll stay away.
