Looks fine to me. This is where I am supposed to complain that Honda doesn't make a hatchback Civic.

More of a "liftback" than a hatchback...Dodge did these for years with the Lancer/Lebaron sedans in the 80s, and then the Shadow/Sundance.

They work well for long cargo, especially when you preserve the car's length (not like the shorty hatches ie: the Mazda 3). Also good for a US car buying public that seems to prefer the sedan profile over the wagon profile.

      Looks good!

IMHO... that is NOT a hatchback.

sure the 'trunk' and rear glass MIGHT open, but a hatchback needs to have a much more utilitarian rear cargo hold.

hatchback rear glass should be near 90 degrees, not near 30 degrees.

Looks like Hatchback/Liftback, definitely has a trunk. That's when no one cares.

Bummer. I was hoping you were kidding.

Was it a pre-production car or an early production car? That could make a big difference in things exactly like you are describing.

It was on the lot for sale with a window sticker.

The shifter is horribly vague and the fit and finish is still old Neon-esque

Oh! I didn't know that they had hit the lots yet. A nice shifter and other primary controls are really important to me. Some stuff I don't care about too much, but pedal feel, shifters and steering I absolutely do.

If you have your foot on the brake and push the clutch pedal in, you feel a "thunk" in the brake pedal.

Wha? Weird. I assume you only got to try one car, correct?

I may have to try one out to see if that's across the lineup or not. It could be just that there's not enough rigidity in the pedal assembly, but it could be something like a bushing on that car that's not quite right. (Not that a bad bushing would bode well for the build quality of the car, mind you.)

Did it to a different but similar car at a different dealer later in the day. Same thing.

I don't believe you. Most reviews I've read have characterized the shifter as good, but with slightly long throws:

Light, that is, except for the 2nd gear gate, which exhibited a sticky resistance. The remaining gates engage positively, and the clutch take-up is smooth and predictable.

You're literally the first person I've heard say anything even negative about the shifter, let alone that it's "horribly vague." So I doubt that it's anything of the sort.

As for your thoughts on fit and finish, I simply think they're untrue, and useless in their vagueness besides. I suspect you just mean that the interior isn't up to your standards, or something. But by the standards of what fit and finish means, it's easily class-competitive, and the car appears to be built and specified well.

More pertinent, I think, is the near-universal praise for its driving dynamics, its value proposition, and its drivetrains. A lot of reviewers outright called it a driver's car. With a hatch, that's downright interesting.

I've read plenty of reviews by people who I'm reasonably sure have, and they all disagree with you. Your posting history makes me doubt whether you're credible. But okay, smarty pants. I've got an errand to do, and it'll take me right by a Dodge dealer. We'll see what we'll see.

"Coupe" is French for "cut". If coupes were meant to be two-door, they'd be called a Deux. It's a body style, not a door count. Let it go and move on.
