Commando.
I think of my gym shorts like a bathing suit.

^ It is a fine line!
I'm going to try most all of the suggestions here and report back. Then I'll buy a bunch of whatever works the best. Okay, maybe bunch was a bad choice of words.
Buh-bye to the current stable:
Hanes Boxer Briefs (scratchy!) Miserable when sitting. Junk really.
Fruit of the Loom Boxer Briefs (pull down in back when squatting). Junk status.
Roundtree & Yorke Boxer Briefs (Okay, but nothing special.)
Roundtree & Yorke Shortie Spandex briefs (Seams kill your skin raw if you walk much!)
Calvin Klein Boxer Briefs (a fave, but gettin' worn now)
Traditional Boxers (Hate the shape. No support.)
Old School Jocks (Threw them out a while back. Bleh.)
Note: Apparently I have an ample booty. A soulful female school teacher I know personally actually nicknamed me (behind my back!) "sweet cheeks"!![]()

I've scored a few pairs of Nike, Under Armour, New Balance and Fila compression underwear at places like TJ Maxx & Marshalls. They are all a typical boxer brief style and all for under $10. Worth checking out. In fact, I have gotten all sorts of great deals at those stores on tech shirts, running shorts, etc...

My running shorts have a brief lining built in so I don't wear anything with them. For lifting I usually sport Calvin Klein Pro Stretch boxer briefs (what I usually wear daly). When biking I'll wear Nike ProStretch compression shorts. Swimming gets no undies for obvious reasons.
I have like 20 pairs of the CK Pro Stretch and stock up anytime Macy's has a sale -- been wearing them for the last 5 years and I'll have a nervous breakdown if they ever go out of production.
