ARMA 2 Day Z Mod, anyone playing?

I just re-installed my copy of ARMA 2 CO to play this mod. Huge open world + zombie killing + persistence + permadeath = awesome. I've only played an hour or two but damn, this is fun. You start off on the coast with nothing except some bandages and a flashlight. The rest is up to you....

I've been an Arma 2 player since near release and while I gave DayZ a good month or so of playing I've lost all interest in it at this point.

Frankly, as someone who had "mastered" Arma 2 long ago it presents extremely limited challenge and excitement compared to a new player.

Anyone who enjoys thinking about a zombie apocalypse should definitely give it a go though, just bring a lot of patience because people like me, who know the map like the back of their hand and play in well-organized groups using military-style tactics with the best weapons available in the mod, are going to be looking for you.

Yes, I've been playing for a little while (tip of the top hat to Big Morgan). It's pretty great, but the challenge does seem to decrease quickly once you have a critical mass of good gear. That first little while is pretty intense though, especially now that there's no starter gun

I've been playing this for about an hour so far, and all I have to say is that players are scarier than zombies. I know I'll get better at this after a while, but in the meantime I'll have to assume everyone is like Big Morgan.

I don't know anything at this point, so it's all very intense to me.

I've found the key is to play low pop servers until you can find at least a rifle. This way you have some defense against player killers.

Shame it isn't all players vs. zombies...that'd make for a much more interesting game.

Imagine being chased, as a Hind sweeps by, gunners hosing down the zed host. Then landing, and rescuing you, even if they don't know you - That'd be fun as heck.

There was a very dumbed down version of ARMA 2 which was free for a while. The full maxed out ARMA 2 game is about $30. I'd imagine the Mod is free though.

To play the Day Z mod (which is FREE), you "at least" need ARMA2 (original, $20) + AMRA2: Operation Arrowhead (standalone expansion pack, $20). BUT there is also a version called Arma 2: Combined Operations (it is actually Arma 2 + Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, $30 *saved $10). So this is the minimum charge to play the Day Z mod.

BUT, the zombies' high res textures in DayZ Mod are actually made from the texture files in ARMA2: Private Military Company (an expansion require original ARMA2, $10). So if you want to play Day Z mod with the best looking zombies, you need to get this one as well. Again, this is optional.

It's actually something I thought was pretty cool. In order to let people play with everyone who didn't download certain expansions --- the expansions were free, but were very poor pixelated models (really very muted textures/lines etc.). If you payed for the expansion, they would activate high-res graphics.

It's brutally ironic to the point of hilarity that people bitch about how they're "forced" to have bad textures in the game they "ALREADY PAID $30 FOR!"

Watch out for the server-hoppers boys and girls.

I always wonder about these games. I haven't played it, but based off of what I am reading, I wouldn't bother. I've played games like this before where you are thrust into a world with absolutely nothing and are expected to compete with the people that play 20 hours a day who are all kitted out. Then add in the zombies and it's even more complicated. Real life possibility? Maybe. But it's a game and I'm not going to get to that level of frustration I tried playing some sci fi MMORPG game one time that was like that - anyone could attack and kill anyone in the game. So of course I start out with the worst ship in the game and I can't fly 20 feet without someone in a freaking full bore battleship blowing me away. Of course there was always the option to pay real money to buy upgraded equipment, but I won't go there....

To be fair, there is not artificial limiting mechanism like character "leveling" or "learned skills" in this mod.

You can find an AKM in about 15-30 minutes of looking - max - in this game and at that point your personal skill level is your determinant factor. I've killed many a sniper-rifle wielding human player in Arma 2 with nothing more than an AKM.

To compare it to an MMORPG just doesn't hold up.

I bought it Saturday night, downloaded through the night and played Sunday. Pretty confusing, but I got the hang of it. I am still confused on what to do.

So I got supplies, but now what?

I have a dual monitor setup and i just open this on my 2nd monitor (kind of cheat :p). Of course u still need to find where you spawn first...

Imagine stalking someone like the above "I just got the game. It's very confusing. Do we not have a map?" poster and people like him with a DMR. You seriously need only common sense in order to out-skill about 8/10's of the player base of this mod.

The joke - as I stated above - is that they put too many zombies in a PVP apocalypse survival mod.

If you are looking to get into DayZ, check the Steam Summer sale.

You're looking for ARMA2: Combined Operations. It's on sale now under $30... If you check the deals it may go on a flash sale or deal of the day for significantly less. I only buy games if they are typically deal of the day, flash or community vote. Otherwise I wait til the last day and then check all the games.

Easy to run on steam. All you do is set a switch by right clicking the game, go to properties and insert the line from the dayz install instructions. From there you choose combined ops when you launch.

This game is so much fun!!! i've been playing about a month, maybe longer... i'd consider myself to no longer be a noob at the game. the BEST part about the whole game isn't the game itself... it's all the awesome stories that spawn from the game.
FOR EXAMPLE:
playing the other day... me and my friend were in the firestation in cherno (with a friend on the hill outside cherno) and a guy started shooting at us... from the top of the large buildings... turns out he had a buddy up there... and 2 others on the ground... so 4 total... My friend ran out of the firestation and killed one of the ground guys, I ran out and killed one of the guys on the tower with an enfield... then died from the other guy on the ground... then my buddy on the hill killed the other guy on the tower. Then when I re-spawned, I ran up there to try and loot their bodies and the guy who shot me was up there watching their stuff and shot at me but luckily I ran off the edge and killed myself! good times.

I do normal co-op online gaming (I design simple missions and my buddies and I play them against the computer) I haven't bothered with Day Z yet though.

I've got everything set up and working. I played for a few hours today,mostly crawling around. Towns seem to be mostly useless but I eventually found a castle with a gun inside.

I need a handy guide of good places to get supplies.

I'm camped somewhere in Elektro, I hung out there for a good couple of hours gathering supplies and looking for survivors. Never saw anyone.

I've been using the Reddit Dayz Servers as they seem to be the most reliable.
