this may sound a bit silly, but when was the last time you took a long spirited drive in the country? (twistier the better IMO) As far as I'm concerned that's the whole point of owning a car. I know they can get you to and from places you need to go too, but that's just the bonus to them being fun to drive.

Hey Aaron, here are the pictures you sent. I really like the car! Saw it in person and worked a bit on it back when it was gas powered, but I am definitely digging the diesel.

As for the love kindling, here's an idea: take it on a drive to Kitchener this Sunday to attend the KW Bug Out VW show. I went a couple years ago and it was a great show, guaranteed to give you some new inspiration for the Fox

I work this Sunday sadly. It's not that I just having a hard time throwing money at a 25 year old car that is not going to have any resell value and Alain that damn second gear bushings was a problem when she was gas powered also.

I drive my f150 in the country all the time and love it, I just love to drive !

As for that bug out what time is it from when too when ? Thanks for posting those pictures for me bro !

Car looks nice....looks a lot like mine although someone has gotten hold of a flat black rattle can under the hood!

There are two ways to look at the point about the 25 yo car. You can say it's 25 yo and regardless of condition its not worth putting anything into OR, you can say this car with the diesel gets me pretty damn good mpg, in some cases that it would take several thousand dollars to replace if it got wrecked, so maybe the Fox is worth more than a person might think.

I think you would be happier with a 5 speed, and tbh I wouldn't trade / sell my Fox diesel for anything. I can't replace it without spending a lot and even then it wouldn't probably get the 52mpg the Fox does on the highway.

One qualifier to that would be the weather right now in Iowa sucks....and so I'm driving the tdi with AC since it's miserable outside, but if it weren't so bleeding hot I'd drive the Fox.

Also....where did that manifold come from? On the NA diesel I think you'd breath better with a stock unit and a panel filter.

When I did my conversion I left everything the way it was on the gasser car minus the FI stuff, including the harness and ECU....I took it all out.

Then I identified electric circuits that were needed for the diesel....not many, and where those could come from under the hood so I didn't add a bunch of wiring.

The only thing I had to add was the pre-glow system, and that came from the Audi 4k that donated pretty much everything. There's plenty of access to the correct circuits in the fuse box for that too, and if you want to get fancy the stock fuse panel already has location for the strip fuse.

As long as your car is timed correctly the stock radiator for AC will handle the cooling needs. What car did that radiator come from? Also, what's the sensor inline in the upper radiator hose?

Aaron the show goes from 8am to 4pm roughly... All the info you need is in this link.

If resale value worries you, maybe the best thing would be to sell the Fox (sell to ME). Joking aside though, there are little things you can do with little money that would go a long way, and definitely add some value to the Fox. It always amazes me how much difference a good cleaning will do to any older car - a can of lacquer thinner and a rag to get rid of the overspray or "over drips", some degreaser for the engine bay, hit up a junkyard and get the little missing pieces from the interior and exterior... you'll have a new car just by doing these little things.

I can have a 4-speed bushing kit brought in August, but hopefully by then you can find a 5-speed. That newer Fox you told me about that's in a junkyard near you, isn't that one a 5?

Holy poo balls that thing is far cleaner than mine ! Where is your exhaust manifold ? I can't see any of your exhaust at all. Looking at your bay beside mine makes me hate my car lol

Plus your body is in far better shape !

U have the 4 speed ? And is that the Origonal rad ? Mine had a hole in it and I was too lazy to keep it so sourced that Honda rad it cools far better than the fox dad ever did.

Well it might be cleaner but I was lucky to get it in pretty clean condition...only had 34k miles on it.

I kept the Fox 1.8 exhaust manifold so it's really close to being a stock exhaust except no cat and a tad bit bigger, and only one muffler at the rear.

I have the 9Q 5 speed that came with the 4k donor car although if I were looking for a 5 speed I'd look for a PSA since it's likely to provide better mpg.

I got lucky, my car had a bad head gasket and it sat inside a shop for several years before I got it. And the body is cleaner but mine has been hit before too, driver side quarter panel was hit and repaired before I got it...it looks ok but it's not good enough to fool everyone.

Don't give up on your car....it might need some refinement / cleaning but if you get close to the same mpg as I do you would miss it a lot if it went away! You should replace the intake though, that's very restrictive on the NA diesel. I might have a spare...

So I was debating selling this beast I have decided I want to put money in to restore her and mod her we are not talking anything like Jamie has but maybe pull put my engine tidy up the manifold and air intake shave the engine bay and do some body mods so it looks more like alains car instead of a scrap pile. This is where the fun takes place I have no freaking idea what to do to this thing .

    Suggestions wanted :

Cleaning up under the hood I'd say should should be your focus. OR you could go the other way, and make the rest of the car look like the engine bay, kind of an oily rat-rod diesel Fox!
    Either would be pretty cool

    I second that

A good cleaning of the engine bay will make this car look so much better. In the future you can go turbo, and swap in a PSA. A paint job, maybe a brazilian front end...

Damn, didn't know those 1.6 diesels were interference motors. Tough break!

They are, there's not a diesel out there that I'm aware of that isn't an interference engine. There's no way to get a compression ratio high enough without being interference.

I checked the quantum bentley, the following transmissions should be of interest:

    2M 08/81-07/82 1.7L gas
    5M 07/82 up 1.8L gas
    2N 08/82 up (210mm clutch) 1.8L gas

All these have .60 5th gear and 4.11 final drive

    3M 08/81 up 1.6TD
    9Q 07/81 up 1.6TD

These have .73 5th gear and 4.11 final drive

All of these have 90mm flanges

    From Audi 4000 Bentley

    MV
    2M

These two have .60 5th and 4.11 final drive, no application dates apply.

Audi Bentley doesn't say they even used the 013 9Q but my donor 82 4k diesel had one from the factory, the production date on the trans was consistent with production date of the car.
