So if someone were looking at a Spyderco as just a daily, lightweight, knife that isn't huge which one would you guys recommend? The G10?

Benchmade Griptillian would be a nice choice too. Simple, cheap, not too shabby.

I like my mini grip but its overkill for a glorified letter opener at work (new daily carry). I used to carry a nice Case Copperhead for many years but wanted to daily something more manly.

I carry a Benchmade (some unknown older HK styled model) daily, about 4" folded full size. I use the heck out of it. It's a bit expensive for a daily carry but it's well worn and has been in my pocket for about 4-5 years. I won't cry if I lose it.![]()

I used to carry a black on black Kershaw Scallion. I actually went through two. Lost both of them out of my back pocket.
I really liked that knife, but it's impossible to find them in that configuration now. I don't want a mossy oak or plastic handle. So now I carry the Scallion's little brother, the Chive. It's a tiny little thing, but I almost like it better than the Scallion because of the size.

I've been EDC'ing an Emerson CQC-7v. I like this thread btw... I have a slight obsession with sharp pointy metal.

I have been carrying one of these for the last year or so, and I love it. A few months ago I thought I'd lost it, and I went and bought another just like it. Of course the next day I found the other one, so now I have two!
I like mine so much I bought one for my father and brother last Christmas. They both like it as well.![]()

This thread got me thinking, a nice knife could make a good father's day gift for my FIL. Anything available in the $50-75 range that would be recommended? He's a big guy (tall) so anything too compact would be lost in his hands. Also, he's gotten big into pistols lately, so without getting too "tacti-cool" something that "matches" his carry guns (3" KAR, 5" Sig Saur 226) would go good. I like that black Benchmade Mk1Racer posted, something along those lines?

benchmade, spyderco, kershaw all make great knives.
these run about 90 bucks. very cool looking and available with black scales, which matches a lot of guns well.
the boker subcom is also a cool little knife. super easy to carry, comes in a half dozen varieties; serrated, wharncliffe blade, different scales, etc. they start around 30 bucks and go up from there. it is relatively compact though, which means it might be a bit small for him.
kind of an oddball, but a bigger in handle sizing, the spyderco rescue is a unique knife available in a half dozen varieties of color, edge, and blade type.
stack, i'd also check out this thread...lots of fine choices in here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...elated-weapons

i'd say a small fixed blade like a RAT Izula would be a fine choice. the CRKT Dogfish has a bottle opener on the bottom of it and is a 2.5inch-ish blade.
might want to check the countries laws she's going to, as rules can be very different place to place...and though the locals might waltz around with AK's, the rules might be interpreted differently for a westerner/tourist.

Depending on where she's going to be, carrying a multitool is probably the way to go.. Leatherman etc. She'll need a small blade, pliers, for lots of day to day things. I wouldn't even think about getting something bigger. The Masi here walk around town with 8" blades on their hips. I've had guys try and sell me machetes at the gas station. Made one guy at the station scream like a little girl when he tried to "display" his wares. Dude just shrugged his shoulders, turned to me and tried to sell me a belt, then sunglasses, then..... Sometimes gas pumps just aren't fast enough.
FYI in many East and South African countries the vast majority of police don't have guns. I haven't seen one armed cop in Tanzania in nearly a year. Further north of here and west it gets a bit more wild west. The Congo on up West is a bit more aggressively gunned up.

Easy. Nice place. As long as she's got a bit of common sense, city smarts, she'll be fine.
I don't know how old she is but one very important thing to keep in mind is... watch out with who, where and how much she drinks. Being with a group isn't protection. Also she needs to be very careful about taxi rides. In many cases taxi's are a bit more like buses. People are constantly getting in and out. Taxi's and mugging go hand in hand.
The first thing she needs to do once settled is get the phone number of a trusted driver. He'll be more expensive, but the risk goes away.
