Am thinking about trading in my '04 Touareg for a new/newer JSW. One motive behind the switch is transmission/gear change issues with the Treg. Looked at getting into a Tiguan but see in that chat room similar transmission challenges with the little ute. Loyal VDuber here, but need/want a reliable transmission. I skimmed the threads under JSW and do not see discussions related to transmission or transmissions "learning" driving style. How have trannys on JSWs held up?

    Thanks in advance!

Hard to understand what you are trying to say. DSG is fine but my choice in manual. And, I don't know any tranny's that held up a JSW

Older generation Jettas had trans issues but the newer ones have been bullet proof so far. The DSG is a phenomenal trans.

So far the DSG is just great as a tranny. No complaints,no issues a joy to use. Every once in a while it will hesitate ,but not a issue. If you're in for an automatic I wouldn't worry. JP

lol - tell my buddy that has had tranny issues since day 1 with his JSW DSG. He's had it in the shop no less than 10 times and they haven't resolved the issue yet. Lemon law process has been started and underway.

I stopped buying auto transmission after three consecutive VW's had issues.

How long has auto transmission been around and they still can't get it right
I'm not good with numbers, I just count on knowing when I'm high enough

The DSG is not an Automatic transmission. It is a Manual, with no clutch pedal, shifted electronically. You will not find a torque converter or valve body anywhere in a DSG. Big difference. I am sorry to hear about your friend's bad luck. I work at a dealer and never see DSG problems. But almost every 05-06ish era Jetta and some Passats all need their transmission replaced. Japanese tranny not designed to handle German torque.

I traded an 04 Touareg on a 10 JSW. After 20k miles everything works flawlessly. The touareg auto tranny was clunky on gear changes. On the JSW they are almost imperceptible.

Porsches use the same type tranny.

I love the DSG transmission. Lightning fast shifts with the ability to shift manually. Check out this great comparison video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRwfv...e_gdata_player

    '10 CW JSW TDI 6MT

While my JSW is 6MT, my girlfriend's Golf TDI is DSG, and the Passat CC I rented this past week was DSG as well. I much prefer 6MT (due to my love of rowing gears) but I am impressed by the DSG transmission in these cars. It is worlds better than the "tiptronic" auto transmissions in other cars (both VW and non-VW).

    - DSG vs manual.

In the context of service life costs, the manual will be cheaper. The DSG needs maintenance every 40,000 miles. The manual doesn't need this, though manual transmission fluid isn't lifetime, either. I haven't heard of a DSG clutch change yet, but the DSG does have two clutches. They may take twice as long to wear out as the manual's single clutch. Or not... But clutches do wear out, no matter whether you you push a clutch pedal or whether the car shifts for you. You also have to add in the costs of acquiring the DSG.

As to which is "better" to drive...it depends. Our TDI has DSG because the wife is comfortable with the DSG in traffic, but fears a manual...even though she can drive a manual.

Our 2.0t gasser is 6MT. I love both the engine and the 6MT. I don't drive it in traffic much because that seems like such a waste of a great car.

The DSG TDI is a hoot to drive--loads of torque. We retrofitted our TDI with a GTI steering wheel equipped with paddles. That lets you grab a quick downshift much easier than you'd get by reaching for the console mounted control. This is probably the best mod you could do to a TDI JSW w/DSG.

The TDI's DSG is great, but I find the 6MT a bit more satisfying--even if the DSG does a better job of shifting than I do. In traffic, the DSG is more relaxing though, so the best advice is for you to drive both and see what you like.
