Thread: New starter has 10 tooth pinion, not 11?

Can anyone tell me the reason why my replacement starter for my 24v VR6 only has 10 teeth on the pinion? Is this ok? Apparently this one superseded the old part.

Check the application for automatic versus manual transaxles. They are different on many VWs and/or Audis.

Well the reason I have this starter is because I called a VW dealership with the part number on the starter I removed from the car. The part they gave me (the one with 10 teeth) is apparently a starter that superseded the one i took off of the car.

I ended up having the dealer call VW directly, they said this new 10 tooth starter supercedes the old one and I was given the thumbs up to use it. Has been working fine for 10 days now so far.
