Call in sick, hope they don't want a doctor's note, or just tell them it's a family emergency (make up what kind) and roll. I haven't had to travel, but I've taken time off to interview for other positions before. You gotta do whatcha gotta do![]()

Not sure how I should tell my current boss I need to take a 4 day weekend to travel across the country for an interview. I work at a school and already have scheduled vacation time. I do have some personal time but only about a days worth. Take sick time and just call in sick both days? Job interview is 2500 miles away and is something I really want with posibilities for growth.

Yes, there are only a few ways to handle this:
1) let your boss know you have some personal business or a family issue to resolve in another city. This isn't a request for time, you are letting him know you need a few days.
2) level with your boss and tell him you have an opportunity to interview for your dream job.
3) you look pretty sick, you'll probably need to call in and miss some work. Risky if you need a doctor's note. This works best if you have to leave work in the afternoon and then be out for two days.
It sounds like the company you are interviewing with isn't paying for you to fly there; otherwise, you could be there and back in 24-36hrs??

I could but figure ill spend some time with, family back home. I rarely miss work and my boss knows I already applied to this job and am looking to relocate closer to home. She even wrote me a recommendation when I applied to this job. I will probably just let her know once I know the day and times of my flight.

So your boss knows AND wrote you a recommendation but you're not sure if you should ask her or lie to her? You have an ethics problem my friend.

If you are taking time off to visit family, take vacation time, visit your family and interview for the job. It's not that difficult.
