Hi, I bought a 1999.5 Jetta with 217k as a project car and bought it with solenoid codes. The car could be manually shifted into 1st and 2nd but if shifted into "3" it would stay in 2nd. If I put the car in "D" it stays in 2nd with no shifting. I ran a vcds scan and heres what came up.

I cleared the solenoid codes and they would immediately come back. With that in mind I did alot of research and came to the conclusion that I should change the trans wiring harness. I purchased the ribbon style harness from electrical advantage in Oregon. I installed this trans harness today without breaking any solenoid clips etc. also changed the trans filter and fluid closely following bentley instructions. After changing all this I cleared the Trans Fault Codes, they went away and said "No Codes Have Been Found, System is not ready for interrigation". I started the car and went for a drive figuring that I should so the computer would do its thing and then I would run vcds later. The trans acted exactly as it did before with the same problems. I turned the car off and ran vcds again. Heres what came up.

So now theres 2 NEW!! trans codes. . . Im making things worse apparently. How could these codes be new? Im stumped here and dont know where to go from here. Im thinking to check the resistance on the solenoids? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank You . Im calling for help from the 01M god

Correct me if I'm wrong, I checked as many grounds as I could find. 3 ground mounts under the battery box, a ground strap going directly to the trans, and a ground under the plenum about a foot after the TCM. Drove the car and no difference, cleared all codes etc they still come back. dse anyone know a good DIY thread for ohm testing the TCM ? thanks

I pulled the TCM today to inspect it. I noticed these 2 rectangular electronic parts that seem to have seen excessive heat possibly, does anyone know if this could be the problem? Im no electrical engineer but that stood out to me because its flaking and discolored. How can I ohm test this unit ?!?!? I would like to swap a known working unit to see if this is the problem. Does anybody have one laying around? 01M 927 733 EN. Any advice is appreciated.

You cant Ohm check a computer and see if its good. Diagnosis of a bad computer consists of checking everthing that could cause the problem (meaning everything that could cause your codes) and when you have eliminated everything else then you check powers and grounds to the computer with voltage drop tests.

But if you have obvious burn damage then you might want to try a computer. Especially if you've had charging or battery problems and the car has been "jump started" or charged.

Im not sure what else could cause the codes. I highly doubt 6 of the 7 solenoids need to be replaced. And it was weird that when I put the new internal harness in that it threw 2 new codes. It makes me think that its electrical I just don't understand the correlation between the new and old codes. I also had a code that said throttle body adaptation unsuccessful intermittent. Another interesting thing that I noticed is that the ATF fluid temp reading in measuring block 005 would only jump between 0 and 11 deg celcius so when i changed the fluid I had to "manually" check the fluid temp. I know that temp sensor is brand new because its tied in with the internal harness.

ya, I doubt it as well... but what if the ONE power wire that powers ALL the solenoids was broken and therefore none of the solenoids could "work" and the computer triggered codes for all of them?

And what if that temp sensor got its power from the same place that all the solenoids got its power?

Or maybe you just need a computer since the computer provides the power I mentioned. (assuming you have a 2.0 AEG)

check your solenoid power wire for 12 V. Of course you'll have to reinstall the computer for this check. If its got 12v then you may need to do this with it plugged in and working so you'll need to backprobe the connector. If there is reduced voltage or no voltage then verify the integrity of the wire between the computer and the solenoid connector and if that wire is good then you probably need that computer. I would lean torwards the computer since you have taken it apart and found damage.

To check the solenoid power wire for 12v stick the positive probe on female pin 1 of trans wiring harness and neg probe to any ground with ignition turned to on position?

any ground?? No. If a ground is your problem you'll chase your tail all day long.

Always use the battery negitive as the ground and make sure there is no voltage drop between the battery post and the battery terminal clamp.

I just got a used "working" TCM in the mail, plugged it in and the same codes came up, cleared the codes and it said system not ready for interrogation. Start the car and drive, same symptoms same codes. Do I have to adapt the TCM to fix this? I don't think so because how would a different TCM remember the same codes? So i guess its the wiring. I pulled apart the looms. . . all of them. I checked that the TCM is getting power (Pin 23) and it reads the same voltage as battery. Checked all grounds again. checked the solenoid power wire for any king of voltage (Pin 67) and it reads .04-.06 V with the key turned but engine not started. I pulled the chip out of the old TCM housing and volt tested right to the actual pin 67 and get the same reading (all of this with neg probe on battery like you said). I didn't do that with the "new TCM" because the it has paint drops on the screws so the seller knows if its been opened. The car still throws solenoid codes 1,2,3,4,5,7 and G68 NO SIGNAL with either TCM in. How are these related? I feel like they are related by sharing a ground or power wire or something, i just don't know. Im losing hope unfortunately . Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

That is just a vag-com thing... vag-com rechecks for codes quickly, before the trans computer has finished the clearing process. This means nothing.

What about pin 45 coming from fuse 15? Why are you saying "same voltage as battery". You should be saying 12V. Is your overall battery voltage low?

Oh, finally got around to doing what I suggested eh? This is your problem.... Now why would the TCM not be giving power to the solnnoies? probably because its lacking power going to it. Is fuse 15 blown or corroded? If fuse 31 providing pin 67 corroded? Checking voltage at the fuses can help identify voltage drops at the fuse. But I always pull out the fuses and scrape them clean anyway, because I've fixed many problems this way. Pin 63 might be a power to the TCm as well. Not sure by reading the schematic.

Auto trans fluid change or flush will not make a trans fail. Stop spreading the wives tale/urban myth.

Battery is at 13.86v when the car is running and tcm main power wire (pin 23) is at 13.72v running. Is this the voltage drop you are referring to that could potentially be the problem? Solenoid power wire (pin 67) is at .15v when the car is running. Will check fuses tomorrow, I have to head out to work. Thanks.
