Is my clutch cable broken?

How do I know if my clutch cable is broken? I was driving downtown last night and went to shift to third but my clutch went to the floor. When i got under the hood nothing looked broken or out of place, but "clutch lever" moves up with a bit of force and can push it down but its a little harder.
Really hopin its not the clutch or anything major and expensive. just got done paying for spring term

Why don't you look at the end of your clutch lever and see if the cable's "nub" is still there? If it's not, of you can pull it out without any tension, your cable has sh!t the bed.

If it is there, check up at the top of the pedal. there is a little grommet that holds your cable to the pedal that is notorious for sh!tting the bed. easy enough to fix without any tools, mine has been ziptied up for about 3 years now.

if the cable isn't visibly broken, it's probably a cracked release finger or a hole in the release plate.

alright so the end of my cable does still have the "nub" and i cant pull it out at all. Ill have to check at the top of the pedal thanks for the advice guys.

sounds like you might have punched a hole thru your clutch's thrust plate. I just repaired this on my own last weekend. Had to drop the tranny, obviously. while i was in there i replaced the entire shift linkage, some seals, new flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, etc.

I purchased it all from GAP several months ago.. iirc it was about $200-$250 for all the parts. Not including the Harbor Freight engine support bar that cost me $59. The actual failed parts (thrust plate and spring) run a whopping $13+tax but I recommend replacing the other things while you have the tranny out. just makes it that much easier.

well, this was the first time i've removed the tranny or done any clutch work on a car. Not much different than working on my motorcycles, just bigger parts is all.


I had someone helping me and it took me two hours to get the tranny completely removed. The rest took me about 7 hours total. Including all the shift linkage (including inside the cabin), seals, etc... cleaning 20+ years of grime off the tranny and other parts took a lot of time as well. I would guestimate I could do it again in half the time. I stopped lots of times for beer and smoke breaks too

The engine support bar is a must have, i can't imagine not having it... also, strapping (with a ratcheting tie-down) the tranny to the support bar made it much easier to lift and wiggle the thing into place.

This is your most likely answer , an easy fix but you're all set to assume the worst case scenario and drop the transmission? Do yourself a favor and pull the cover off the end on the tranny and have a look.

If you have a headache you do not immediately book yourself for brain surgery.
