Thread: Revival: a Build thread

  1. 07-10-2012 02:22 AM #1
So let me start with this.

I Currently own a MKII 16V golf. The shell is in less then pristine shape and requires ALOT of rust repair, I loved the car but it is in no way worth the trouble that would be required to save it. A few of my good friends where aware of my situation and knew I really wanted a clean shell to swap my motor into. Yesterday I got a phone call offering me a red 4 door jetta shell for $400 bucks, followed by a MMS with this picture:

The 16V from my golf will be dropped in along with my transmition, manual rack, and wiring harnesses. the bay will be cleaned and painted bed liner black... Areo e codes will also be installed for coolness.

Stay tuned for progress starting in 1 week

    Un diocumented:

Removed the motor & transmition along with the front K-frame and bumper, which left me here:

Found some rust under the battery tray, Even though I am doing shaved rails i figured this should all be patched.

    started shaving out the firewall

Today was spent on frame rail shaving

Rn out of welding wire abou 3/4th of the way through the first frame rail, Il be doing the second tomorrow.

Some of it was flux and some of it was MIG. My shop has a Canox 220V MIG and a small 110 volt Flux core, The Mig was used for the firewall and Flux everywhere else.

    CAT

It is a bed liner finish for durability reasons.

I used the MIG on the fire wall because the Flux was not working at the time, I would say uou should be very patient setting up everything with lots of practice on sheet metal before you do your welds.

I made carboard templates from behind the wfire wall transfered them to sheet metal got fit right then tacked into place! Thanks for all the encouragement!

Time from 16V out of old car into new one = 16 hours with some ****ing arround.

Time to build wiring harness? Daiz...

So car has been together and running for some months now, Lost a bunch of the pictures for the last half of the build.

    heres what i do have.

A few days after last update I had the rest of the wiring buttoned up and in. After that I got the fenders and what not back on looked like this:

The snowflakes where not my cup of tea, I traded my old golf shell for some 15" estorials.

Car moved for the first time under its own power and left this nice open space for me to clean up

    came home the next week

had a buddy come over and went for a cruise!

I'm hoping to get the small rust spot fixed in spring along with a new set of wheels, carbs, and getting the bay color matched to the exterior
