I think you have to stick to the AEB engine. From 2000 they're equipped with Aww engine which is a bit different

looking for a replacement motor for my 1999 A-4 quatro 5 speed, any suggestions?

I think I lost a crank bearing or something in the low end of the motor in my A-4, So now would be the time to upgrade, does anyone know of a compatable engine that I could put in place of the stock one, maybe a bigger one or one of better quality? Thank you for your help.

Slowmotion, thank you for your help, is that a improved version of the motor in the 1999? Its a great car, I bought it for a couple thousand with 156K on it, I will shop around for the motor you suggested.

you will want to find another AEB
Any VWs made after 92 are usually only good for drive train donors.

unless you are up to swapping out wiring harnesses and computer/controllers.
