Awesome build, always cool to see how it all plays out. Have fun with it!

This is GREAT! I wish I could do something like this. MBN!

    Brace yourself, cool story bro:

Several years ago my co worker/friend had the exact same car (which was running fine) and wanted to sell it. After nagging him for months relentlessly day to day I got him to drop down the price and then it evolved to having him just give it to me. I told the wife what I was getting and I got completely denied. Yes you heard right, she wouldn't let me have a free car. Her argument was I unnecessarily spend money on it.

Fast forward to early this year and I bought myself a b5 a4. See what she did wrong.

My friend ended up donating the car to a charity which auctioned it off on ebay. The person who got it bought it at a great price and sent my friend a really nice letter. The letter stated that he bought for his father who was very ill and has wanted one for a long time. So it went to a good home.

here are a few more random photos. The car is a daily driver and gets its fair share of use, but also is very well taken care of, my wife often tells me that i care about it more then her...

    105k miles @ 105 mph

older ride height with the bilsteins and H&R "lowering" springs

"work in progress"- although the smurf color was pretty cool, cant imagine what a car looked like completely that color...

This car went from factory rated 164hp, to 220 with this turbo on the right, then to the rs2 turbo on the left rated at 311hp, then of course as previously mentioned the volvo turbo and now 3071r

shot of the yellow fogs, they really do make a huge difference, and yes that is a second cq in the driveway, i have owned 5 of them among many other pre 95 audis

mini me that hangs out on my desk

i also ditched the stock wood trim that comes in these cars stateside for one of the many trim options available in the s2, i choose perforated leather, there was also a carbon fiber option, but I couldn't find a good original set for a price i was willing to pay

Video from the first dyno day, my car had literally just been put back on the road, and only had a base tune.

My dad has a minty pearl white 91 Coupe Quattro, so I am a fan of these.

Not as good as yours for sure, his still needs a non NA motor. However, his 5x112 swap with 996 brakes still makes me happy.

    Keep up the good work

that is a hard question to answer, there are many factors to take into consideration:

the 100% stock quattro system from my car, vs quattro systems from others varies.

My stock complete drivetrain was completely intact when i last dyno'd the car, and had over 400 ftlbs of torque running through it. This is a point where the stock transmission will generally start to "shear gears" however I have never done any real launches in my car and baby it a bit so i didn't have that issue, however i knew i was pushing my luck so i swapped in a quattro transmission from the b5S4, the S2's in europe got this 6 speed 01e style transmission from the factory, so it was just a matter of swapping a few things to get it into the car.

My friend who also dyno'd the same day as me and put down 625whp in his 81 UR-Quattro has a stock drive train as well. (utilizing the same transmission i now have), the only real problem he ran into with that power level (and just for the record he is the opposite of me when it comes to "babying" the car, he constantly pushes his to the limit), but he was starting to twist stock axles. he had painted a straight white line on the black halfshafts, now looking at them they have twisted, and the line starts to wrap around.

I know another CQ guy who has 750ish awhp and runs 9 second quarter mile times and is also using a similar 01e transmission and mostly stock drive train, i believe he has upgraded halfshafts but still runs stock diffs.

(keep in mind the dyno figures i talked about with my numbers and my buddies were a mustang dyno at 4000+ feet of elevation. 1 out of 3 B7RS4s that have dyno'd there broke the 300whp mark, and it was moderately modified. that is a car rated at 450 hp from Audi)

All that effort, all those photos of work done on the car, swapping engines, gearboxes, wiring harnesses, a blown engine and a rebuild and the first thing you say is "Yellow fogs are really overplayed".

Wow! That looks fantastic! Great job!

I have a noob question (and maybe this should be in the 'Ask those questions you are afraid to
    ask thread')...

But what physically happens in the engine to actually cause a hole in the block?
Does the metal expand too much for the heat capacity of the block and it just blows out or what?

    Again - great build!

the hole is caused by the rods breaking through the cylinder wall. there are many reasons this can happen, the most common reasons are:
oil starvation, causes a rod to seize and at high speeds can send it through the wall
Rod bending- that was my cause, basically too much power for the stock rods to handle, rod bends then is unbalanced and then boom, it was making really bad sounds for a few seconds before it let go completely (i was on the freeway)
bad tuning- bad tuning can cause pre-ignition and again bend rods and send them through the block.

Impressive work and a nice finished product. When I was a kid yellow fogs were a sign of "serious" cars (in my mind, anyway). I've long liked the look of those 90Qs.

Thanks guys for all the love! I honestly thought since this is TCL, i had a feeling someone would have a very negative opinion/hate.

  34. 08-08-2012 10:44 PM #69
there WOULD be tons of hate . . . it's an audi, after all!

but you said the magic words . . . "i built it all myself, i know what the hell i am doing, and i am not here for your approval, dammit!"

that + complete lack of whining or indecisiveness = TCL love and respect
