Thread: New Owner - 2002 Eurovan Weekender

  1. 07-13-2012 09:33 AM #1
    Greeting All!

I recently purchased a one-owners southern owned 02 Weekender. It is in amazing condition with 75K. This week I had the oil, transmission fluid, and differential fluid changed for peace of mind. After the service was complete it actually drives better than when I purchased, shifts soooo smooth. Anyway, the family and I already love the van. We had been shopping for years, waiting for the right deal to come along. So here we are...

All options and features work great except for the fog lights. They don't turn on and the small led indicator on the switch doesn't illuminate either. Bulbs and fuse are good. I'm stumped.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Couple of questions...

    1. Is the headlamp switch an original US/Canada-spec switch or did the previous owner swap to a Euro switch (and use the incorrect one)? The US switch as you rotate it only has two positions...off and on (full headlamps, no parking lamp setting). When on it's oriented in the straight-up position. Later Eurovans had minor, yet important, wiring changes such that if you swapped in a euro-spec switch it wasn't always the correct one for the year and fogs might not work.

    2. If it appears to be an original switch, check your relay panel. In the first row above the fuses (so bottom row of relays) position #10 I believe is where there should be a foglamp relay *or* a z-shaped metal jumper. My 2000 Eurovan had a jumper even though I had no fogs, but it nevertheless was plug-n-play as far as adding a foglamp-equipped switch was concerned. My 1991 GTI had a relay here (same electrical system configuration as the Eurovan) instead of a jumper. Either way, if it's totally empty (no relay or jumper), that's a problem.

    3. If that all looks OK, get a test meter and test one (or both) of the foglamp connectors for continuity to ground (usually a brown wire or brown-with-white wire). If that tests OK, then check the other wire in the connector for 12V+. (Remember, the ignition must be on for this to work too.)

Thanks for the quick replay gti_matt!

    1. The switch is original and not a euroswitch.

    2. I have not checked the relay but will start there. I confirmed that it is relay 10 that control the fog lights.

    3. Checking ground is a good idea too. Might take me a couple days to find time to do this if my relay is in place.

    Thansk again, stay tuned!

Fog lights are fixed. It ended up being the relay or lack of relay. Relay 10 was installed in the relay 9 slot which is suppose to be vacant. So I pulled the relayand plugged it into 10, the rest is history. I am pumped, thanks for the help Matt!

    Glad it was simple.
