Thread: First Audi!

  1. 07-13-2012 08:19 PM #1
    Hey there!
This is the first Audi I've ever owned and I'm stoked! I'm looking to get active in the forums to hopefully gain some knowledge and maybe some connections for that hard to find stuff.

I own a 2001 A4 1.8T FronTrak 5 speed. I bought it in a virgin condition and in my 6 months of ownership have began to make love to it. I'll spare you all the details and just list it with some pics.

    Performance:
    APR stage 1 tune
    Carbonio CAI
    Single mass clutch and flywheel
    APR TIP
2.0t coil pack conversion Coming Soon
    710N DV Coming Soon
    (all in the mail)

    Suspension & Brakes:
    OEM Sport suspension (Factory install)
A8 front rotors, TT caliper carriers

    Exterior:
    HID Low beams (Factory install)
    HID yellow fog lights
Smoked fog lights and side markers
    Clear cornered headlights
Debadged A4 and 1.8 from trunk
    35% carbon tint
    RS4 grille
    Blind spot mirrors

    Interior:
AWE Tuning vent mounted boost gauge
    Pioneer AppRadio 2
    Valentine one with concealed display
    Escort ZR4 Laser Shifter
FUNK switch for parking brake bypass
    Full LED interior light replacement
    Beetle sunglasses holder

    Carbonio intake:

    OEM Big Brake upgrade:

Boost gauge, V1 concealed display & App Radio 2:

    Dirty ass shot:

I've got some plans for the future, but I keep changing my mind.. So I'll spare you. But I'm open to getting good deals, so that may steer the direction of this car more than my wildest dreams.

Let me know what you think!

Looks good other than the tinted tails. Coilovers and exhaust should be the next mods for sure, assuming all the maintenance is up to date. Happy modding

looks like you have some good progress thus far, but that taillight tint is terrible. imo

    hi.

  11. 07-15-2012 01:58 AM #11
Damn. A lot of hate for the tail light tint. The smoking of the lights is actually the only thing I didn't do. But I'm curious, do you guys dislike smoked taillights in general? Or is it the way mine look in particular? Because I will say that the picture I put up makes them look a bit darker than they really are.

  12. 07-15-2012 02:05 AM #12
Here's a pic of when I first purchased the car. A little better view of the tail lights. I won't defend them too much, as it wasn't my decision in the first place, and I'm still making up my mind as to what direction to go. I'm just curious if a better view changes anyones mind.

To me smoked taillights aren't awful and in most cases can look good, the first picture however did make them look non existent, the new picture makes it look a lot better. But what it comes down to is if you like them that way then keep them tinted.

Well I'm not a fan of tinted tails in general but those aren't too dark like the first pic made them out to be. I'm a fan of contrast in colors so the red of the tail light against the black looks best to me.

Any pics of your HID fog lights? For some reason both of my fog lights burnt out at the same time...I was looking to upgrade to HID's.

More details on that? What kit?

I used this kit. I checked to see what it would be to get these parts directly from Audi, and while the rotors were reasonable, the caliper carriers where like $200 a piece. So this is a really good deal, and later you can get rotors directly from Audi. There's also the option for drilled and/or slotted rotors on ECS.

Ya, I was just curious do to all the hate. I'll definitely do what I feel is right. But I realized how dark that picture made them look, so I figured I'd show them in a better light.

Actually, I'm gonna have to edit my earlier post and say that, the smoking of the lights and the HID fog light conversion, are the only things I didn't do to this car. So I have no idea where the kit was acquired, but I can check out what type of kit it and get back to you.

I don't know if I have any good pic of my fog lights on. but here's an ok one. My fog lights are smoked, so they aren't as bright as they would be.

Thanks for the pic. I'm wondering if I should go yellow like in Europe or just go really bright.

  23. 09-08-2012 07:02 PM #23
It's been a little while since I've been on here. So here's some more recent pics. You guys may have got to me a little, in regards to the smoked tails. So I got rid of them, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results. The "T" stays tho, no matter what you think

    35% carbon film.

RS4 grille. No front plate. I hope to fill the holes and shave the washer caps eventually. Probably side mount my plate, as it's required to have a front plate in Oregon. So far though, no police run-ins over the plate.. even after being pulled over for speeding, I was not warned about the plate.

    LED interior lights

Funk switch for parking brake bypass.

    Blind spot mirrors

I have a 710N DV in the mail, along with everything to run the coil packs from the 2.0t on my 1.8t. Hoping for a smoother idle and response.

It doesn't come with the pigtail/harness. I ended up cutting out the pigtail for the front foglight switch from a parts car. So if you do order this one, I'd suggest doing the same. You can run straight wires to the back, but having the pigtail makes things a lot easier.

P.S. Only the front foglight has the same pigtail/harness. The rear foglight pigtail has the retaining clip on the opposite side.

Just checked out your build thread and it looks like you are pre-facelift. Here's the right button

    http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-...unk/ES1251177/

No sure about the pigtail, in this case.

Also are those brushed aluminum side mirrors? or just silver from the car that you took the interior from?

Came here to say exactly what coopa did. Funk should ALWAYS = Futurama.

Also I will now be looking into that head unit!

Good stuff so far, glad to see you ditch the smoked tails!

It's a Pioneer AppRadio 2. I'm pretty satisfied with it, but because it runs everything off of my iPhone, I had to uninstall a lot of stuff on my phone to make it run as fast as shown in the video. It doesn't help that I like to use a bunch of goofy Cydia apps. But for jailbroken iPhone users there are some nice tweaks available, as well as the ability to run any app on the head unit (a little buggy tho).

    Link to Jailbroken tweak.
    http://avic411.com/index.php?/topic/...phone-control/

It's also cool because with the right wireless OBD plug and Dash command iPhone app, you can get a lot of live diagnostic on the head unit. I haven't quite invested in that yet, but I may in the future. I already have a K-II cord, so it would be a little bit of overkill.

It also comes with an external GPS antenna, so you have actual GPS as opposed to the iPhone's triangulation method of "GPS", while using supported iPhone apps. It's also like half the price of almost all NAV units.

And yes, the Funk switch is ideal for watching Futurama, while driving. (Not that I would break the law in such a fashion )

your cars sick. i like that you have the funk button hooked up. i have one but dont have any use for it. i had a bypass installed that automatically makes the dvd work when i turn my car on. i was thinking about making it dual rear fogs or something.

Thanks man! I've been stalking your build thread for a little while, and I love what I see! Been thinking about a Certifit bumper myself... just haven't built up the motivation to drive from Portland to Seattle where the nearest certifit is. Diggin the vette wheels as well

I'll probably go with a relay solution for my bypass in the future, because I'd like to use the Funk switch for the amp on my subs. Seems like a more appropriate use of the "Funk".

Another picture, because I'm a whore...

Got my APR TIP in the mail, and man was it a bitch to install with the Carbonio CAI. I'm now only able to get 1 screw to hold it down, as the TIP is pushing everything back, but there are no gaps between the carbon fiber and the heatsheild, so I'm okay with it for now. But I'll probably shorten the pipe soon.

I can definitely feel a little extra perk in my turbo response, as well as a little amplification of the spooling sound.

Also got my hands on an Escort ZR4 laser shifter

Yes, my bumper is pretty haggard... and yes that is a horrible location for the transceivers. Hopefully when I get the chance to refinish the bumper, I can figure out a better solution for the laser shifters. But for now I just have them slightly tilted up to compensate for the horrible placement.

    Here's the cockpit

    ZR4 display

    And this is Sa$ha Fierce!!

Going to Pacific Waterlands this weekend. Maybe I'll see ya there!
