Just to know: Is normal that when the wipers are on the DRL go off?

    ...

well i've never really looked to test that.

i mean, normally DRL means it's a normal day with adequate lighting.

if it's overcast and raining, and you are having to use your wipers, naturally the drl will be off because you will need your headlights on (if it is set to AUTO, it will turn your drl off in most cases, even during the day, if it's dark enough)

Yes, the lights are set to Auto. Next time it happen I will see if the headlights go on. Thanks.

one thing that happens all the time with me is when i'm driving to work in the morning and it's daylight out, but my DRLs are not on (light switch set to AUTO) because it's just not quite bright enough outside yet to activate them, so the car has my headlights switched on.

or sometimes in the middle of the day i'll drive into a tunnel and the car thinks it's night so the DRLs go off and the headlights come on. it's no big deal.

but i've never checked to see if activating your wipers automatically cuts the DRL off. just tends to be if you need the wipers, your drl's would probably be off anyway.

Yep, I noticed that even if it's not really dark, if I switch my wipers on (not on intermittent), then the DRLs turn off, and the headlights turn on. (When lights are set to auto)

On other forums I read that is required by a new o recent law that when the lights are set to Auto and the wipers are on, the DRL must go off and the headlights on. It's a safety new feature.

well, i've always heard that if it's raining you should turn your lights on, so i guess now it's done FOR you. i'm cool with that.

kind of like in another thread, somebody was like "why do i have to push my brake before pushing the start button??" WELL... you're alwas supposed to push the brake before starting a car. now, you HAVE to.

I'm so used to having to press the brake not only to start my other car, but I work at my fathers repair shop and all we work on are late model keyless ignition luxury cars which require your foot on the brake in order to start it.

Now any car I get into, regardless of keyless ignition or not, my foot is on the brake before I start it.

well... no. ok? no. get real. everybody can't be the boss. it doesn't work that way. eventually you have to have rules. "nannies" convict murderers and keep lead out of your baby's food. you think you're that tough, go ahead and live in a country with lax/nil government and see how you REALLY like it.

by the way, i tested it on the road today, and the DRLs do NOT turn off when i turn on my wipers, even with my light switch on Auto. so, if the OP's car is doing that, he should ask the dealer what that's all about. i have a 2012 tdi sel for reference.

The DRL's turn off a few seconds after the wipers are on. But after I turn off the wipers, the DRL's takes a much longer period to go on again, aprox. 4 minutes. This happened only on Auto. My Passat is 2.5 SEL Premium made on may/12.

It appears that this action is similar to the B6's with AUTO wipers and lights. More interestingly is that with both in the AUTO position, when the wipers are intermittently wiping rain, the DRL's stay on. It isn't until the wipers get into a fixed rhythm do the DRL's turn off and activate main lighting.

And yes, it seems that the AUTO lights are quicker to activate the main lighting than to deactivate it.

Can anyone with the VCDS software tell me if there is a setting in there specific to the Headlight/Wiper utilization issue mentioned in this thread. It seems that it works for some, but not for others. It is a state law in PA that the headlights be on when the wipers are in use. With the switch set to "Auto", My headlights do not turn on with the wipers when they are in use...I figure it is just a setting in the VCDS software.

I've noticed this as well. I have the rain sensing wipers activated and when it wipes intermittently during the day, the DRL's stay on. But if the rain keeps up and the wipers get into the full 'ON' motion like MUG318 states, then the DRL indicator does off and the headlights are on. I can also see the footwell lights on as well. I normally leave the light switch in AUTO and always leave the wipers in the intermittent position to take advantage of the rain sensing. Once the wiper action stops, then the lights revert back to DRL's. I'm OK with this, since I don't have to worry about either. And this is a very big help when you live in a place that normally gets over 120" of rain a year and you can go from dry to rain and back to dry in a couple miles.
