Thread: 16 v questions

  1. 07-14-2012 04:22 PM #1
Well staring my project here next month and want some answers.Where would the best place be to go or send my 16v head to get ported and polished built for 800 plus hp? Another question is so trying to build this bottom end to the max hp i can get can you sleeve it or can i just max bore it and get away with it.I'm shooting for 1000hp all wheel horsepower so let me know this is no bull **** either doing and it will take a little but will happen and going to start posting pics of process.

What are you looking to get done exactly?

Jake @ JRM Fabrication did the head in our 16v race car, it makes 190whp na. It is a stock head with a basic port clean up. The 16v head flows fairly well, if you are planning on using a turbo, just buy a big one

He is in covington and could also supply you with the turbo parts and fabrication to actually make 800hp. He is currently doing a 1.8t big turbo setup in a porsche 356

    1000hp, not happening.

    find a different/bigger motor.

It also says its the first 1000hp 4 cylinder in Germany, which kinda should make you wonder why. The planning behind that motor takes knowledge and resources way beyond the PNW vortex realm. The turbo motor in the double j drag Audi isn't even close to those numbers with far more work and money than I would ever want to put into a VW motor. PS the double j car is somewhere around 750hp last I heard.

the 1000hp 16v has audi rods and stock 16v crank i believe.
also its on e85 with 60+ psi which makes basically all the power right there.

A big one at that after my tinkering with building NA 16v's and seeing how much time and knowledge they require I couldn't imagine trying to squeeze 5 times that power out of these motors. 200-220 NA hp would make me happy and 350-500 hp using forced induction seem to me like the limits of anything I would ever want to mess with before I moved to a different platform.

VW engines are known for big torque numbers not hp numbers...

VW engines are undersquare motors which means: At a given engine speed, a longer stroke increases engine friction (since the piston travels a greater distance per stroke) and increases stress on the crankshaft (due to the higher peak piston speed). The smaller bore also reduces the area available for valves in the cylinder head, requiring them to be smaller or fewer in number. Because these factors favor lower engine speeds, undersquare engines are most often tuned to develop peak torque at relatively low speeds.

So first thing you need to do is get your rod to stroke ratio closer to 1:1 (SQUARE) if you want big hp #'s
The W16 engine used in the Bugatti Veyron is an example of a square engine - with an identical bore and stroke of 86.0 millimetres (3.39 in).

    ***Information jacked from Wikipedia***

    Something to think about though...
You ever wonder why BMW never advertises their HP #'s? because if you look them up..they really aren't that impressive..but they are surprisingly fast... Big HP #'s mean nothing if you only use them for 1-2 seconds...you want a fast car..focus on how long you can use the hp you have..like BMW does..a 500hp car with a flat power curve will stomp a 1000hp car with one of those dramatic arching power curves any day of the week...unless you are racing to 250mph of course...

    my 42 cents..
