I just bought a 84 GTI less than four hours ago. One of the problems I had was the speedometer wasn't working. So I bought a new cable, but when pulling the old one out the plastic gear broke off, falling into the transmission. I've tried fishing it out with my fingers and using an extended grabber, But I can't feel it or see it. I am pretty sure it's at the bottom of my transmission. Do I have to unbolt my transmission or is there a way around this?

The hardened gears will chew it up, no problem.

As you've found it has worked out fine for you.
