Are you doing straight pipe after the cat, are you increasing the exhaust diameter or just getting rid of the resonator & muffler?
Really depends what kind of "straight pipe" you are doing.
It will be loud (cockpit noise & vibration are not comfortable), draw attention from the police and most likely won't pass inspection. You WILL not lose back pressure... that's a myth. Without proper tuning for straight pipes you will probably find some power loss in your low rpm range.
All the cars I have done straight pipes on you would need to really romp on the gas in a street situation to compensate for the low rpm loss, but WOT and especially in a highway situation they screamed. But I never tuned them for the pipes... usually did it for WOW factor or cheap fix for a bad exhaust.

Just get a high flow cat and a decent kit like Techtonics Tuning. In NJ they only check for the CEL. I never really notice the difference with a hi-flow vs no cat personally if you buy a good brand.

I thought that if you straight pipe a 1.8t that's bad for the turbo because lack of back pressure?
#8
Well I have a V6 and I personally like it, the V6 has such a deeper tone to it anyways and where I live in Wisconsin we dont go through e-missions.

I have a 1.8T and cracked the flex pipe enough pulling an ill-advised U turn that after a couple weeks the whole pipe was basically severed and then I took the rest off and was running a straight pipe. It sounded dope, i didn't notice any performance issues at all. But that sound coming from a Passat with nothing done to it cosmetically to enhance the sportiness just didnt seem right. I got mine fixed. Your call though!

3 inch test pipe to 3 inch straight pipe dumped before rear axle. If you want a lot of noise and annoyance then go ahead and do it. It drones like a bitch.

Having it dump UNDER the car is asking for a tone of drone!

I actually cut my muffler off today with no resonator and it is very loud. Sounds good but draws too much attention. I will be putting at least a glasspack on this weekend for sure
It's called excellent resale value. If you own an American vehicle, you may not be familiar with it.

my b5.5 v6 exhaust setup is currently this:
oem res & muffler removed;
y-pipe moved closer to cats;
28" magnaflow glasspack 2.5" inlet/outlet inline after y-pipe;
2.5" straight pipe;
borla pro xs muffler 2.5" inlet/dual outlets to ss tips.
the glasspack helps work as a res and reduced the rasp and drone i was getting with just a straight pipe running back to the borla. the sound is perfect for me, deep purring at idle, nice sound on acceleration is little-to-no rasp (maybe a tiny bit of a gurgle/backfire after a hard acceleration). it's civilized on light acceleration and low-speed cruising, and screams at WOT. i still have just a slight amount of drone at the 2.5k rpm range, but it's very tolerable for me.
i started by removing the res & muffler and adding 2.5" piping w/ the borla muffler. the sound was very loud and ballsy, but the drone was overwhelming and annoying at times. adding the glasspack inline was a good solution for me and it keeps the overall setup clean and light (the oem suitcase res is a heavy beast).
if you're into getting louder and deeper exhaust tones and are ok with a small bit of drone over the stock super-quiet setup, then i'd recommend a 2.5" cat-back setup w/ borla muffler and your choice of res. techtonics makes a catback system like this that sells for $700 + install. my parts + install cost me ~$650 total. the benifits of the techtonics system are that it's been tested and tuned. you'll save money piecing a system together yourself, but it may take some experimenting to find the right setup.
going just straight pipe is going to sound like ass, drone like a mofo, and piss off the neighborhood... along with probably scoring you a few noise pollution tickets if you grab the attention of a cop that needs to write a ticket.

if you're near nyc in the near future, feel free to hit me up. i'd be down to meetup so you can get a better idea of what the exhaust setup i described above sounds and feels like.
i don't have recording equipment good enough to make a quality sound/video recording for people to check out.

This is what i just did.
B5.5 V6
Y pipe after down pipes, one flex pipe, no cat, no resonator or no muffler, added two glass packs that are spread out (one where the resonator was and other where the muffler was) idk if it because its a V6 but there is no raspy or crackling sound and it sounds bada$$,also I mount the o2sensors just perfect and havnt had no cel on and its been a 1week![]()
