Last fall there was a slight bit of oil in the expansion tank, so I replaced the oil cooler & seals with brand new ones and flushed the engine. That seemed to do the trick, until now.

I am very sure my head gasket went and I got a cooling system full of oil & water pudding. I noticed this after a long trip when the car overheated. I had only slight water vapor at the tail pipe at that time. Checked the oil and it was more than a quart down.

Bottom of radiator was not hot and did not turn the cooling fan on. When I checked the coolant expansion tank, it contained a thick goo the consistency of pudding. Obviously the radiator is plugged with this stuff as well as the heater core. Bought a new radiator (expansion tank nib on rad cracked fumbling around), but am worried about the engine itself.

I am now disassembling the engine to take the head off and replace the head gasket. I removed the cooling hoses and cleaned the greasy pudding out. It was very difficult.

The pudding, when it exits the system (leaked on the engine and ground when I removed a coolant hose) seems to turn thinner oily residue after a few days.

Will the pudding in the engine do this (thin out) and allow me to flush it out or will this pudding remain thick or harden and block the engine coolant passages up?

How do I clean the inside of the engine?

The engine is in the car and I will not be able to remove it as I have to do the work in a parking lot.

Before I move onto replace the head gasket, I will test the oil cooler for an internal breach and await the intelligent, accurate help this site provides.

    Thank you for any help.

The easiest way would be to fix it and get it together, then take it to a Radiator shop and have them flush the cooling system. They use a non-foaming detergent to clean the system. since you cannot remove and clean everything, seems this will be the only way to get it all at the same time.
Tradition is the art of making the same mistake repeatedly, on purpose.

I cross posted this in the cabby forum and got the suggestion to try a half a bottle of shout with plain water, start it, bring it up to temp, let it cool and then flush it....

I'll likely experiment with the shout before I try it to see if it foams, cause that would be bad I think....

I also have Liqui-Moly Radiator Flush...

The pro radiator shop may be my only good option though. Thank you.

I'll follow up with the results.
