Thread: 93 Eurovan not running on all 5 cylinders

  1. 07-16-2012 05:23 PM #1
I have a 93 Eurovan MV 5 speed, and for a while now its not running on all 5 cylinders and the check engine light is on when it runs like this. its running kinda as if the distributor is wet. i replace the distributor cap and rotor no help, I have a feeling it may be the Spark plug wires and I have them on order, Has anyone had this problem before??
    Thanks!!

    1. Go buy this:
    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...514E&_osacat=0

    2. Follow these instructions:
    http://www.race.nangreaves.com/golf/FU01/ch8.1.html

That will give you the fault code(s) that is behind your CEL. Cross-reference it to the table of fault codes at that URL and go from there.

Your black and white terminals on the car for doing this are located above the fuse box. Remove the fuse box cover/storage bin (by your left knee in the driver's seat) and look up under there and you'll see them.

Or for that jumper harness, here's a crude ASCII drawing. Make your own. Heck, you can probably use a paper clip for this even.

I had a similar problem with my 95 EVC after driving in a very heavy rain. In my case the distributor cap and rotor were most of the problem as the inside of the cap had water in it and the rotor was arcing. I also took the time to replace the plugs and wires as well to refresh the whole ignition. Found that one plug was probably factory at 95,000 miles and it looked really bad. This got everything fireing. Water can get thrown up into all these sensitive parts if the EV is missing the plastic belly pan and most of them are. May be a good place to use WD-40 for what it was designed to do!

The part number is 357971514E so you can google that. However some places are crazy expensive for something that is just a wire with two proprietary ends (that's all it is) that fit over the shaped terminals on the car. But that's why you can just hack your own though for cheap too.

FYI...stumbled across this old post of mine on what wires to jump to get the OBD1 fault codes from the check-engine light. This was in my Mk2 Golf GTI Digifant but given that VW does seem to be consistent with wiring colors and terminals and whatnot, make your own jumper:
