Any parts store should have the actual hose you need.

It's actually one big hose that goes all the way into the cab through the firewall. You will have to cut it into 3 pieces to accommodate the recall work
If you were a Volkswagen....who would your owner be?

Never had the recall work done to my car so it was just one piece of hose, well, two that i had to frankenstein since one end was 3/4 and the other end was 5/8

ok so Foxy Black has made some serious progress this weekend (albeit small stuff). She got new strusts and upper strut bushings in the front on Friday. Today I changed the upper radiator hose, the spark plugs, the front brake pads, and the valve cover gasket. And I had some fun with her too, as evidenced in the pics:

The front brake pads... yeah, maybe I had two more weeks left...

Valve cover and cam cover off (also you can see the new upper hose off to the side):

Annnndd here's the fun, I figured screw it, they're already off so why not?! (I sanded both the valve cover and timing belt cover, flat blacked the vw and audi rings on the timing belt cover, then taped em off and went red. I think it looks lovely)

that right there is a nice clean head! there was nt really any gunk in mine, it was just dark oil mostly. So my serious tick, it's pretty loud. would it be a valve or a lifter?

    Lifters.

You could try MMO, or sub a quart of ATF before an oil change, or Auto-RX for a long term treatment. Would probably clean up the top end pretty dramatically as well over 3000 miles.

The good news is that we only got 8 lifters for these motors and they're pretty easily changeable

    http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...aulic%20Lifter
~$9 each. ~$73 for the lot. Get a 268* cam while you're at it

And a cam seal (good ol VW uses the same seal for I believe the IM shaft and front crank as well).

That rubber valve cover gasket will be reusable

So, to be clear, These are also called cam followers right? If so rockauto has em for $6.62 a piece. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...9%2BVOLKSWAGEN

If thats correct they should be pretty easy to change. Just mark and remove the cam, pull the old followers then lube and insert the new ones yeah?

Isn't there a trick, lightweight follower from a more modern 8valve (ABA or AEG) that is a direct fit?

Cool, I didn't know that. I know people say to steal valves from ABA's. 1mm thinner stems.

1996+ have the light weight lifters I believe. I couldn't justify the cost unless I had spent a lot of money on head work and a really aggressive cam. The price difference is substantial.

    95 and earlier:
    034109309AD
    Ina OEM
    Hydraulic Lifter
    $9.13
    http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...aulic%20Lifter

    95 and up (including AEG):
    050109309H
    Ina OEM
    Hydraulic Lifter
Please note Audi/VW service bulletins exist regarding valve and lifter replacement techniques.
    $11.86
    http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...aulic%20Lifter

    maybe the prices dropped recently?

    damn, wish I had known.

looks like both are listed for 1995.

I wonder about longevity / fuel economy. probably negligible.

Ok awesome! Next paycheck... make the damn ticking go away (hopefully)! It would really ease my mind to not hear that noise.

Also, since i changed the oil I've noticed i have a really lopey idle when cold and hesitant power in first and second. Is this because of the thicker oil or does it sound like a fuel delivery issue?

Earlier Foxes tended to have the VW/Audi logos on them. Most if not all later ones have the Brasil logos.

Ah yeah the brasilia logo kinda sucks...

And i haven't run it out of gas, but i did run it really low once a couple weeks back. The lopey idle started when i fired her up after her oil change, that's why i asked about it.

Also, when it comes to that whole nest of fuel stuff Under the car, what can i get rid of? I didnt want to mess with it because one of my lines is so corroded its probably holding itself together with rust. Sigh...

i understand i had fuel troubles when i finished my fox and started her for the first time in 2 years fuel was every where under the rear i had to replace one main gas line then i had to cut the end off a hose and slide it back up so it wouldnt leak but the real problem was the fuel resiviour i dnt think you have the same one but the top was leaking and no one had it and i mean noooo one had one not even my mom and she works for VW but i epoxyed the **** out of the thing and its sealed but i just ended up replacing every fuel hose in the rear i had the right diameter hose so it worked out but i have no idea what can be taking out of the fuel rack in the rear i wanted to see if i can take the dam fuel resiviour out but every thing is connected to it and about the low power from the oil change i really dont know then what oil did you use 20W-50?? i know its alot thicker and every one seems to be using it but i think VW made you use 10w-30 for a reason cus it flows better through the oil channels cus it makes sense if it thicker it has to take more PSI to push it through the block but idk just a thought

so she's leaking again. looks to be coolant this time too. worst of all? coming from the middle of the engine bay near the firewall. now, I've already replaced the heater line from the back of the head to the core, the heater core itself, and the upper radiator hose. How many more lines does this thing have? am I right in thinking its just the two left? lower rad hose and the other core line?

The Bentley manual for the Fox specifies 20W50

I know it's Autumn now, but 10W30 only protects well up to 60*F.....It gets hotter than that in Washington!

20W50 has the best range of protection other than 15W40 which protects at near 0*F temps. They both protect engine wear above temps of 80*F.

I will only ever run 15W40 or 20W50, but it really never gets cold enough in WA to warrant switching to 15W40

One thing people don't really think about is the fact these Foxes have NO oil reserve. They only hold 3.7 quarts of oil....same issue with the MK1 rabbits and Jettas. The MK2 got a bigger volume pan.

That being said, your oil viscosity and proper oil level are tremendously important. Foxes have darn near no coolant reserve either. Two of some of the most important fluids in your vehicle....

heh, when I was driving cross country, I finally decided to check the oil level somewhere in Montana. Bone dry dipstick. Took around 3 quarts to bring it back to full. lmao

Brand new lifters didn't make a peep

I have run 10w30 for the past 11 years in various 8v's i have owned and found 20w50 necessary once, and that was due to oil consumption of which the heavy oil obviously slowed that down.

Foxes do have little oil pans, mk1 rabbits/sciroccos did as well but was superseded to the larger pan sometime before 1980. A trick to try would be run the later passat 1.8t oil filter if it fits, Never tried that as I am always on top of my fluids. That filter adds almost a half quart to capacity.
