When looking for my "new" 2011 Golf 2.5 manual, and in the dealers lot, which problems do I look for?
1. Condensation in headlights?
2. Highway wind noise
3. Run carfax
4. ?
Recently been reading about issues in the 2.5 tech forum. Getting nervous. The smart money says get a Corolla lol but I want a Golf. Just let me know what to check for.
Ok. I think maybe I was reading about the older cars issues plus people were talking about the seat fabric and how it wears too fast. Really putting a damper on my hopes of having a good golf.
As for the wind noise, is this a problem that isnt there at first and it develops, or is it just something thats there from the beginning?
I know they can adjust the door and all, but I want it to be flush with the car. No "rigging" to make it go away. Really concerned about this one.
I had mine in three times and two different dealers for wind noise. They are clueless. I fixed it myself with wool felt strips in between the mirror housing and the side window.
its a car travelling at a high rate of speed, if you expect no wind noise the go become an astronaut, you'll love it in space. otherwise do what you can and crank the radio.
No no no. I'm not talking about regular wind noise, I mean a whistle or a sound like your door isn't shut. I test drive a '10 golf and it had that problem. Sucks because around town the car was SILENT like a tomb!
I must have gotten lucky because my 2011 is very quiet on the highway even with a roof rack and air deflector. I am sure now that I have said this my car will develop excess wind noise...
They overhauled the MkV door and the redesign is lacking foam so it sucks. I had mine in for windnoise, and the occasional drip, 4 times. It is better now, but around 60+ mph I can hear it.
My friend's MkV GtI doesn't have a wind noise problem, but if he puts the fan on 4, it whistles.
The heater has an issue at max heat, but a software update fixed that.
The little rear window nipple sprayer leaks a bit, but you won't notice it until you have a dusty rear.
The BT interface sucks for music and you can't control the media device through the car.
If you ever do your own oil changes, you will be annoyed to have to remove the cover under the engine.
You can't have your radio button lights and what not (the ones that make your interior look awesome) lit up unless you have headlights or drls on. It would be nice to sit out on a nice evening listening to music in the dark with the interior ambient lights on.
dont worry about the 2.5 reliability. it's one of vw's most reliable engines. And in consumer reports 2.5 golf reliability is a full red circle meaning the most reliable. They rate the gti's reliability as just average. I do hear a faint whistle at highway speeds but its barely noticeable. And a corolla would be the last car I would look at these days. So boring looks, so common, so boring to drive period. Id say the most fun to drive cars in this price range are the new focus, golf, mazda 3 and tc.
The "2.5L" forum has moved to facebook. We had too many trolls and dumbasses in there, so now it is a private group where idiots can be banned.
Tons of good info there.
I have a Golf 2.5L, a Beetle 2.5L, and I had a MKV Jetta 2.5L. All of them have been dead reliable. Minus the 2012 Beetle, but those issues are only related to the Beetle, aka the windows.
Well I was actually wanting to put goals on there anyway down the road. I was thinking I could just add Bluetooth in a few months for around 300. Then the rcd-510.
So, $1000 wheels and tires with car and 300 for bt later or get bt now and $1000 goals + tires later?
What is the price on each car? I would suspect the car with the Goals costs more since it's a $1300+ option and you lose the 15" steelies. If the car with the convenience pkg costs less, I would get that car since you get more for your money. You can always find used Goals for less than $1000. Also, there is no OEM BT kit out there that will work as good as the BT kit that comes installed from the factory. Heated seats are great in the winter too.
I have a 2006 Rabbit 2.5L at almost 90,000 miles, car was solid from day one i had a couple minor issues fixed under warranty. This engine is excellent and will take a beating with a smile. Highly recommended.
Pay attention to the engine oil, dealer puts in crappy oil, I did extensive research on this and I am using AMSOIL. Do not go to JiffyLube or any other crap oil change place. Best is if you do your own oil change, and buy high quality oil. In the US they add synthetic additives to mineral oil and call it "synthetic oil" but it is not really synthetic.
My advice is to get a set of Michelin tires on the car as soon as you get it, it makes a difference with the noise.
The convenience package includes the armrest and I forget what else. My main concern was the armrest. I read that the 2013 is going to have it stock. If you can, maybe wait for an over stock 2012 / new 2013.
