Newey is awesome! He still does all of his design work on the drafting board. That blows my mind. Everybody in industry now days does simple hand sketches for conceptual stuff and then goes straight to CAD. It would be cool just to hear him talk about his designs in-depth and what led them to do what they do.

It's pretty hard to quickly get design concepts into a CAD program and I'm sure Newey doesn't want to be slowed down by the fact that he can't get the curvature just right because of some nuance in the software. I can only imagine what ideas run through that man's head when he's designing an F1.

I don't know what CAD system you are using? Yes, aero is a bit more difficult than straight mechanical, but everyone conceptualizes in 3D these days. That is why Newey said he is a bit of a dinosaur.

Newey does all of his drafting and layout on paper, then he gives it to the CFD nerds who run a couple iterations to refine the design, then it goes to the CAD jockey's to convert the paper drawing with redlines to a CAD drawing.

I use SolidWorks. Ok for concepts, but much better at mechanical design. Newey claims himself to be a dinosaur when it comes to capturing designs, but if he is better at using pencil and paper, use it. I would like to see how long it would take Newey to sketch up a concept on paper vs a seasoned user of a 3D modeling program. However, 3D modeling packages keep evolving quite rapidly and might even get Newey to put the pencil down for a ditigal pen.
