Lifelong layover: Old jets being recycled as homes

His vision is best imagined from above -- where the old birds once flew: a metallically gleaming neighborhood with homes tucked into precise rows, wingtips aligned, near the landing strip where each touched down one last time.

Picture a packed tarmac at any municipal airport then add grass, trees, streets, cars and pedestrians. Now, you’re basically catching the breeze of Bruce Campbell’s ultimate recycling concept: a full subdivision of retired and refurbished commercial jets, looking exactly as they did when they soared seven miles high.

An electrical engineer who adores aeronautics and abhors the waste of scrapped planes, Campbell can see a slice of that dream from his own kitchen, an original galley inside the former Olympic Airways 727 where he’s living and remodeling, not far from Portland, Oregon.

Last year we told you about Oscar Dios, a Swede with a wacky idea: Park a retired Boeing 747 outside the Stockholm airport, and turn it into motel for the budget-minded traveler. His vision has become a reality, with Dios’ 25-room, 85-bed Jumbo Hostel scheduled to open next week.

The Jumbo Hostel is now accepting reservations on its website for stays beginning Jan. 15.
Dorm rooms start at 350 Swedish kronor ($45), with deluxe private rooms at
$1,350 Kroner ($175). For even more, you can spend the night in the plane’s cockpit, which has been converted to a sort of honeymoon suite and is the only room on the plane with its own bathroom and shower.

Bill, did I tell you that Bruce said that some crazy old guy that lived in a wooded lot out side Atlanta when Bruce was a kid had the nose section from a B-29 added to the side of his house? Bruce said that stuff was sold off cheaply after WWII.
