Thread: need shop to help me pass smog

  1. 07-20-2012 12:56 AM #1
    Car Failed Smog

It failed NO at 15 & 25 mph (see below)

The car is a 1984 VW rabbit GTI BOSCH CIS mechanical fuel injection, with o2 sensor, NO EGR, the car has about 300k miles. I changed the cat converter in 2004 and the NO went to 0 it has increased over the years and now it is high and failed. I believe my hc and co are fine, what should I do? richen it up by adjusting the air/fuel mixture to get the NO to drop? or install a new cat, results are below

    15mph RPM 1954
    C02 14.59
    O2 0.26

    HC 28; Max 107 Ave 35
    CO .16; Max .63 Ave .19

    NO 1091; Max 845 Ave 564 FAILED

    25mph RPM 2198
    C02 14.90
    O2 0.07

    HC 24; Max 89 Ave 30
    CO 0.10; Max .71 Ave .14

    NO 726 ; Max 726 Ave 464 FAILED

Did you replace the cat with an oem type one or a muffler shop cat? I know some muffler shop cats are known to be 2 year cats.

    3. Defective Catalytic Converter (CAT)
Some vehicle manufactures have designed their cars to operate without EGR valves. Non-EGR equipped vehicles rely heavily on the Catalytic Converter to assist in the reduction of NO. These vehicles have tendencies to develop CAT problems sooner then those which are equipped. If you own a non-EGR equipped vehicle, and have failed the emissions test for high NOx, pay close attention to the Catalytic Converter.

really the cat that you installed in 2004 was junk. back then the regulation we almost nonexistant so they would be good for a year or two tops. I would recommend replacing the cat since in 2009 they changed the regulation to make all of cat have to be to obd2 standards and require CARB EO#'s so your best bet is to replace the cat and or o2 sensor are really the only things to reduce nox besides messing eith the mixture.

I wonder if they updated and or changed the part. should I repurchse the same part hoping they improved them according to the regulations that you mentioned

the other choice this cat, not sure if it is much better

You will need to get one from a store or muffler shop in California. Sadly we can no longer buy Cats from out of state... I would call around to local muffler shops before buying one from O'Rielly's, might be able to get a deal on one with installation.

    in the tank? intake? cylinders

id suck it through the intake. it truely works, i solved my dad's is300 oil consumption problem with seafoam.

my subaru smoked so much and i tore the cylinder heads off and all the carbon was cleaned off.

so I called a few muffler shops , they wan $140 for the cat and $40 to install it. these are the universal weld in type most likely no name brand made in china which are garbage

I'd rather get a cat with flanges and bolt it in myself, should I get another Catco cat or a Bosal Cat?

have you tried the suggested. i just seafoamed a civic and the nox went down from 700 to 400ppm which made it passed.

This is where you are mistaken. The cat has to be CARB certified and the EO# must match for that year make model and engine. So there not noname China cats most likely there a magnaflow or airtek. I would call around and find the best price I've never paid more that $170for a cat to be welded on. Ask for the part number and EO# and then you can call ARB and make sure its legal. Or post the info and I can check for you. Just need the EO# year, make, model, engine size, and some times engine family number but I doubt it on this old of a car. Also if it a California certified car or federal?

if it is an old enough car and the cat looks just as old, techs don't check for a EO number.

just don't tell them you put on a new cat because the carb legal cats are only a few years old and 85% of the vehicles out there still have old cats.

i also goto nevada and walk into autozone and get my cats there. it's quite the awesomeness.

$180 for an installed cat with California EO#? That's a great deal! Where are these shops? Can you name them so I can get a new cat installed ASAP? Golden Auto Muffler in SF charged me $240 last time around, and a muffler shop in Berkeley wanted $300. I'm also in SF. Thanks.
