Pretty sure the CR-V was copied by Volvo back in the day. Who was first?

I see only similarities, but would never mistake one for the other. I know Honda had the tail lights straddling the C pillar since early generations of the CRV and before Volvo decided to drop the boxer shorts and go with the girdle design aimed at all those independant career women.

didnt volvo have it back in the early-mid 90's on their wagons though?

Volvo started the bumper to roof vertical tails mid 90s with the 850.
99 cross country.
02 cross country- beginiing of the "designed" rear light design versus just the | design.
04 V50.
And yes- to say the Honda CRV designers didn't not use the Volvo design as inspiration is ludicrous.
But this is normal- you take successful/popular designs and design cues and try and form your own version.
Volvo's designs were fairly popular in the 2000s and seen as better than mainstream, so it makes sense for designers to add some of those design cues to their mainstream offerings.

Why you wouldn’t (buy an Optima SX):
Because you have your eyes on the Frigidaire Limited Edition Camry that you saw last weekend at the neighborhood Autoplex.

The 07-11 CR-V looked like an XC90 in the rear. Since there is no second-generation XC90, Honda instead chose to be..."inspired" by the XC60.
