Thread: convertible beetle auto with no high gears.

i just bought a 2006 beetle convertible. i bought the car and it drove fine except for a very long shift bangshift when going into 4. it would downshift 5-4 fine but upshift 3-4 would slip. i drove it home fine but went out the next morning to drive and there is no fourth. fifth or sixth. it just revs. i thought it was a bad valve body so put a new one in and still no high gears. i get gear monitoring code for 4,5,6 which i assume is reving. all other gears are fine and car runs great. is there some lever or something to check without tearing the trans apart. i can find no diagrams , parts pictures or operation description anywhere on this transmission.

Is it an 09a transmission (JF506e) ? If so, I would bet this is the problem: http://forum.mpvclub.com/viewtopic.php?t=26286

it would be a DSG trans which i think is a 9G six speed. as i understand it has two clutch paks that alternate shifting which is why it is weird no 4-5-6. any info on how this trans operates or diagrams would be appreciated.

DSG and 09G trans are two different creatures. To tell which one you have look at the bottom of the trans. If you have a pan on the bottom then you have a 09G which is a 6 speed auto. If there is no pan on the bottom then you have a DSG.

Your probably have a 09G, not the 09A as described in the thread above.

There is a common problem with the sleeve that supports the rear of the trans rotating and blocking off pressure that would apply in 4,5,6. There was one guy on here who found a shop that would go in and replace the one part without charging for full rebuild but most shops are gonna wanna rebuild the whole thing.

Auto trans fluid change or flush will not make a trans fail. Stop spreading the wives tale/urban myth.

are there any diagrams or pictures of the setup in the trans. most cars you can pull the high speed drum and clutches without pulling the transmission. is this possible. i cant seem to find any exploded views of the internal part of the trans in any of the bentlys or other manuals.
