Thread: Thinking of buying a 1974 sun bug with bad alternator. How long can I drive?

  1. 07-23-2012 12:10 AM #1
I recently came across a lady selling a '74 sun bug. its pretty decent shape (no rust, good engine, tranny, brakes etc.) the only problem is that the alternator has gone bad. its not a quick fix, so I was wondering if anyone has any information on how far and long I could drive the car during the day with the bad alternator so i can get it to my garage. The total distance would be about 10 miles. Will I make it?

I would charge a new battery the night before picking it up also

Like most things in life, probably a 50/50 chance.

Probably not such a great idea though.

I agree, I don't know if I would risk it. That's a very important part in any car, especially an air cooled vw.

as long as the battery is charged, and the belt is still connected to cool the motor, you will make it no problem

If you keep the lights and radio off you can drive a long time. I would go for it, but there i always a risk.
