I agree that this is a good idea. I had it once and was really confused why people liked it. It wasn't bad but it wasn't that great either.

This is very good news, after watching Gordon Ramsay's special about Shark fin soup.
I thought shark fin soup is one of the dumbest delicacies ever created. I've had shark fin soup a few times and didn't think it was all that.
It's simply an overpriced broth soup sprinkled with shark fins and get this, shark fins have no flavor!
It tastes like very delicate fine vermicelli with a hint of cartilage.
Shark fins are extremely expensive which makes it a huge commodity for poachers. One whole piece of shark fin can cost between $500-2000 depending on size and all they do is cut the fins/tail off and dump the shark back into the water to die since they can't swim without their fins and tails.

Sharks a menace to society and shark fin soup should be more widely accepted as it makes our seas safer

Finning is repulsive. This is good news, but there is still a long way to go.

This is great but how is a law going to be enforced in a country whose population is so large and engrained to think that this is a good dish?
Great start but they need to start arresting people on a huge scale. Its not that hard. Ramsey was able to just walk right up to where they were drying them.
You think you hate it now. Wait til you drive it.

They are doing it to cut costs, not because there is any objection to the procurement process.

No one really like it. It's just one of those silly expensive things that Chinese people like to serve at wedding banquets to show everyone they are rich and can afford to waste money. It's not a food item that people normally crave and eat in China. It's only served at banquets to impress other people. Most people don't even eat it because it has no flavor. All the flavor is in the soup stock so you can make "shark fin soup" without shark fin.

Stupid asians, everyone knows that the only way to a bigger, stronger penor is to eat the sharks penor.

If people were out catching geese in the wild and removing their liver while they are still alive... yea. Otherwise, I'm on the fence about farm raised duck and goose. Force feeding is bad but damn it, they are so delicious.
And also, shark fin has very little taste so it's purely a vanity food. People are not eating it because it is tasty or good for you. I draw the line on animal cruelty for pugnacious show of wealth.

Wow that was impressive.
I eat shark all the time in Japan, but I'm sure it's some kind of farmed shark because it's super cheap. It's really tender, juicy and flavorful too. I wouldn't suggest more than a small serving though because it tends to give some gastric effects. I think they are eating a different species of shark too.

I think sharks should be studied pretty heavily. They don't get sick, don't get cancer, they're pretty amazing.
If you haven't seen the documentary Sharkwater you should watch it. It's pretty biased but it shows how nasty this whole business is.

It's cheap because it is a by-catch from much more valuable fish. When I lived in New Zealand, they make fish and chips out of shark because you can buy them dirt cheap.
You can't farm a shark... that would be too expensive (they are big time carnivores... you can't keep them in a cage and feed them fish pellets like you do with salmon). Not to mention there is no market for shark. They are by-catch for a reason...
