does it have a passenger side mount? (mk1?)
If so I just the the engine down to the ground with that mount still attached, slide off the transmission, and put it all back together
I don't know how you expect to remove the transmission with the engine still in an upright position? the frame rail will be in the way

I've done it before on an 8v just by leaving that pass mount on and supporting it using the brace and chains hooked up near cyl #4. By lowering it with the brace about an inch I was able to get out an 020. And this trans in question is an 02a so this should be made easier as long as I can find a safe spot to hook my chains onto.

well, just put a jack under it with some padding against the pan and lower it down to the ground
or hook the chain to the two horizontal holes at the bottom of the block on either side
