Thread: heater control valve???

  1. 07-23-2012 04:53 PM #1
My cars squirting coolant everywhere and I think its this but I'm not sure this is the right thing...it looks like the hose on top is like a vacuum tube that probably sucks up more and then the whole metal piece broke off causing the coolant to flow out like crazy. Is this the right thing and if so where can I buy one http://www.flickr.com/photos/8331016...in/photostream thanks for the help in advanced!

Autohausaz lists one but the pic is not like the OE unit....so you might have to call them.

Might try a used one too....

That is indeed the heater valve. The vacuum line on top is what opens the valve to allow coolant to flow thru the heater core.

Nice hole - I can't recall ever seeing the *valve* fail like that. You musta really overheated it. Usually the hoses go first.

The aftermarket heater valve looks completely different, but should work. I have one but have never installed it.

If you want to put it off and don't need heat for awhile, you can make a bypass with an elbowed hose to fit the back of the head, and a hose adapter to narrow down to the heater hose elbow that connects to the water pipe (just to the right of the hold valve in your picture.)

Ok I'm probably just gonna get a new one but I also need the elbowed shaped hose that goes down cause its cracked any idea on the OEM of that?

Yeah I was driving it for a while throughout a couple of days...I'm just hoping I didn't blow a gasket and warp the head...would I notice that right away or?

Sorry, but that is not the vacuum controlled heater valve. That is a one-way spring loaded heater core bypass. When coolant gets too hot, the metal thermostatic valve under the battery tray stops flow to the heater core and bypasses it through a smaller hose to that valve. The broken off nipple is where that small line connects to and that line bypasses coolant around the heater core.

The head gasket isn't likely blown. All that happened is you broke the small "nipple" flange off that the small coolant line goes to

Good point, j-boogie; if what was mentioned above as the "different looking heater valve" looks like these, thinking back, this one is located inside the car IIRC.

Might be a good option to bypass it completely while hunting for it at junkyards. Would Golfs and Jettas use the same part?

As for the hose, someone who has the VW parts software will probably chime in soon with a part number, but risking it being no longer available, a good bet would be to take your old hose to a big parts store or to the JY and finding a similar one, even if it will need a bit of trimming to fit.

    Good luck!

Yep, the heater control valve as Alain shows is under the dash. I've replaced a couple now. So, hope you can find the one you need or a suitable alternative at the parts store.

I've always wanted to delete that one-way valve but keep the heater core bypass. My thought was to use a Vanagon radiator cap with the small "nipple" flange on it and run the bypass line to the reservoir cap and delete the plastic valve

All the heater lines are still available from the dealer, including the bypass valve. Tain't cheap, tho.
