So I have seen tons of people post asking questions about the R32 Head swap onto the 2.8L Block. I figured since I have decided to undergo this hybrid motor build I would make a build thread to document my progress and hopefully provide plenty of info for other people. I also hope that in posting questions in this thread I can get some answers from you knowledgeable 24Vers. I am by no means a professional mechanic and I have taught myself everything since owning this car and I am very excited to get started on this build. I hope this will be a bit of encouragement to those people out there who don't think they can do this, I am not a mechanically inclined individual but I do my research.
I plan on picking up an R32 head within the next couple of weeks and then going from there. I will be building the motor out of the car since my car is my only car/daily and then hopefully swapping it in come spring/summer of next year. This entire build will be pretty slow considering I am full time college student with a clinical assignment which leave me very little spare time.
Since there is no "real" start right now I will take this opportunity to ask for any advice as I get ready to dive into this project. I will continue to do research on this topic and update with any info I gather.
My Plans:
R32 Head
264/260 TT Cams (currently installed/will swap when I install the motor)
Possible bore of the 2.8L block to a 2.9L
Stock Internals
Short Runner Intake Manifold
May upgrade fuel rail/FPR and few other things along the way (bank account permitting only)
Here is the parts list of things that I think I will need to just bolt it on and go (If I am wrong or missing something, let me know).
-R32 Fuel Rail
-R32 Injectors
-R32 Intake Manifold
-2.8L Head Gasket
-Head Stut Kit (INA Engineering?)
-R32 MAF (I will reflash ECU accordingly)
Basically I am looking for any advice on things to upgrade/maintenance parts, and any experience as I go along.
Thanks in advance

Minor Update:
So after a lot of searching I have come up what I think is the list of everything I will need (I will take any corrections if you have them):
-R32 Head
-R32 Intake Manifold
-R32 Throttle Body
-R32 MAF
-R32 Fuel Rail/FPR
-R32 Injectors
-2.8L Headgasket
-Custom Tune for this setup (UM will do this)
-Some sort of stud kit which I am still trying to figure out.

Got some more info today which I will post off for any future reference.
As far as the studs/head bolts go, there is no "custom" stud set that I thought I was looking for. You simply will use 2.8L head bolts.
After talking to killacoupe he informed me of this information but there is just a little trick to installing. When you go to install the R32 you have to make sure the cams are out. When you go to put on the 2.8L Head Bolts they will not fit down the through the head without hitting the cams, this is why they must be removed. I think I am going to go with the ARP Head Studs that INA sells because I know I will have the head off in the future when I add some boost.
Hope this information will help.
Right now I am beginning to start the parts collecting. I should be getting my R32 Head in a few days and then I will be assembling all of the other parts for the project. I'll be sure to post some updates when I get my parts and add any info I get.![]()

I plan on going to turbo but am going to do the head first because it isn't exactly I working order from the previous .:R motor. Lol. Need it machined so I figured why not just do it all at once

Let's us know. I plan on either the head build or a new paint job. Everything is up in the air. I did talk with integrated engineering and they told me it would be good for 700+hp and over 8000 rpm.![]()

Why swap over all those 3.2l parts, and not swap over an entire 3.2l engine?
A plain 3.2l with basic bolt ons will put out way more power than 3.2l parts on a 2.8l block.
Unless you pan on going FI, it would certainly be more cost effective to swap in a salvaged 3.2l vr6.
Get on the LOUD pedal!

Love all the support guys, however no updates will be made for a long time, full time student and broke college kid isn't letting this happen for a while, but there is plenty of good info in here!

I t have two questions related to this swap if anyone can chime in.
I've read that the 2.8 head bolts do not fit due to the bore size in the head itself? Is this untrue and you do only need to remove the cams for the swap? If so thats some good news, as I have some 264/260's as well.
Secondly, what, if anything, needs to be done to the headgasket? I'm assuming because of slight variations in designs for the head coolant and oil passages some modifications would be necessary. Can anyone show what needs to be done, or if it is a simple use the 2.8 gasket over the 3.2?
I'm going to be going a similar route as you guys and going F/I in the near future, all of my other supporting mods have been done and now its time for the serious stuff.
