Nitrogen has a higher density than air that's typically pumped into tires. That means it will leak out slower than traditional air would. Nitrogen filled tires are also less sensitive to temperature change, resulting in a more constant pressure. Compressed air hoses can also contain water, which over time is corrosive to wheels. If a tire is filled properly with dry nitrogen, it will be purged of all air and moisture.

Very little real world difference. If your supplier uses it, great. Just don't pay tens of dollars for it.

I run 78% nitrogen - seems to do fine.

I'm running summer air right now. I'll change to winter air around October. :-)

A little water vapor never hurt anyone (the main reason nitrogen is more stable), and actually air is denser than nitrogen... it's just that nitrogen is a larger molecule vs Oxygen because of the bonding within the molecules (simple way of saying it). Because of this, air permeates through rubber a 3-4 times faster.

I run it in my R and have it in my motorcycles. On my type of bike people usually get around 10k on the tires but I had 10k on mine with little wear, and with got consistent gas mileage on top of it over normal compressed air.

I love Bill Nye the Science Guy!

Anywho...Nitrogen is great in theory, and probably does do everything it is advertised to do. Something to consider though, is that our recommended cold tire pressure takes into account how much pressure the tires will gain as they heat up from driving (probably 3-5 psi in normal driving). Nitrogen, as mentioned is not effected by changing temperatures. So if you want to truly run the specified tire pressures with nitrogen, you should fill a few psi higher than what is called for.

That's interesting - I never knew the ideal gas law does not apply to nitrogen...

More seriously, it's just the water content people are worried about during racing, since it makes it a bit less predictable what the final, hot tire pressure will be.

LOL. Been listening to those crazy techs again?

If it's a gas the gas laws apply. It will expand or increase pressure with an increase in temp. Seeing that tires don't expand much, your pressures will go up the same whether it's air or nitrogen. It's the water vapor in the air that give people fits when it comes to a stable pressure range.

Maybe I worded it incorrectly, but my point still stands. The whole reason to fill a tire with nitrogen is to rid it of the water vapor that is in the "air."

So to make you weenies happy, nitrogen itself doesn't make your tire pressure more stable, the absence of water vapor does...amiright?
