So i have a 1983 rabbit gti and the exhaust manifold on it is cracked and so in my search of finding a new one a friend of mine offered to sell me a full engine, now I know this is an older engine but i know it is a 1.8 8v so i was happy i got it for $100 but when i took a look at the exhaust manifold it was different it had an O2 sensor i believe and the end was round not square so you can bolt the exhaust pipe on. Now what are your thoughts on this? Could this be a mk2 engine or what i will post pics. I am in desperate need for help.

Yuck, toilet bowl. Good a time as any to upgrade to a dual outlet manifold / downpipe
    I really suck at smog.

Yeah I would love to buti don't have that kinda money and I will get one when I rebuild this new engine. Would this manifold still work on my 83 and how the heck do I get the pipe to fit in? Also is there any telling as to what year or so this new engine I just bought is?

The engine code might help you find a year range for the $100 engine. With that exhaust system the engine is likely a MK 2 engine. The code should be on the engine just above and to the left of the distributor where the head and block join. The first two letters on the engine plate should be something like GX, RD or RV.

The only way to use the pictured manifold would be to come up with a "toilet bowl" downpipe. Those downpipes often came with the cat attached. I would think that it would be just as easy to find an appropriate manifold in a junkyard. I don't know if an exhaust shop could weld on a different fitting or the costs involved in doing so.

Having said all that -- you could also purchase an appropriate header system that would bolt up to replace the leaky manifold. FR

mk1 and mk2’s are virtually identical correct because i would like to rebuild and possibly turbo the $100 one.

mkII downpipe will not fit a mkI car. I think there were some toilet bowl combos on mkI cars, I have seen one on a pickup. Best bet would be to find a diesel manifold or any early mkI dual outlet mani w/ or w/o the O2 sensor.
Tradition is the art of making the same mistake repeatedly, on purpose.

from where the manifold ends down is all going to be custom made and custom welded cause i already have a borla 2.5 on the car.
