I guess it depends on if it is what you want. I had a dealer almost get me with on a 2012 JSW TDI offering a $1500 below invoice, but it was 3 things that I did not want. 1. automatic, 2 beige interior, 3 no sunroof. so I said no. He just kept trying to push it to me, until I said I will head to another dealer, then he mentioned about they are starting to take orders for the 2013 JSW's. So I got what I wanted. But anytime you can get below invoice is good in my opinion

i got $1,500 below invoice when i ordered my 2013

On a 2013? That's pretty impressive. Based on the trim I want, $500 below invoice is about $50 over dealer cost, but this doesn't take into consideration any manufacturer to dealer incentive that I am not aware of. I will try to push for more and see where I net.

    Thanks, guys.

I ordered mine about $100 above invoice and thought I did pretty well.

lucky peeps... I paid $1k over msrp. If I hadn't the dealer would have easily sold the car to someone else the next day.

Agreed. I paid MSRP for my TDI as well. Same reasoning. They took a custom order for mine but didn't even care about getting a down payment. I did get my R for invoice though.

lol well it was a funny situation, i walked in and told the sales person i wanted $4,000 for my trade in or i was walking, so i took the car in for their assessment, and their used dept. only offered me $2,500 so the sales person made up the difference and offered me a $1,500 discount off of invoice

Ordered a 2013 and getting $200 above invoice. I think your pricing depends largely on location and demand.

They had zero JSWs without sunroof and manual (completely base) in white. I pondered the Toffee brown, but I think on resale, no one wants a brown car.

I do believe that i'll be paying cash for it so who knows. If you finance, the dealer is making $ elsewhere.

    YMMV.

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of confusion on this thread regarding the definition of "invoice." It's not what the dealer wants to "invoice" the customer, it's what VW invoices the dealer for the car.

Invoice, basically, is the price the dealer pays for the car. (There are complications in that, like a "holdback" amount that a dealer might get that could amount to 2% or so of the price, or special dealer incentives that could be offered on a car line, if it doesn't sell well or VW needs to move a lot of them).

MSRP is the side window sticker price on the car. MSRP is NOT the same as "invoice."

I suspect some people here, when they are saying they got $1500 under invoice, what they really mean is $1500 under MSRP.

$1000 or $1500 under invoice would generally mean that the dealer is giving you the car for free, PLUS donating some cash as well, even after holdbacks, incentives (if any) etc.

Or, like thebarker said, there are other factors and they're making their money somewhere else (trade-in). I can't imagine why a dealer would let you order a car for $1500 less than invoice. Especially a car that they can't make fast enough for demand.

    exactly..

iirc, the 2009 cars had an msrp that was something in the range of $1200 - $1800 above factory invoice. I can't remember numbers for the life of me so I may be wrong, but if I'm somewhat in the ballpark and that number still remains mostly correct then $1500 under msrp is a good deal.

You need Consumer Reports. You build it on their website and they tell you the "target" price. Then they send your request to dealerships in your area that are "consumer reports approved". You deal with their internet departments and they have to honor the target price if they want CR to keep sending them business. The target is usually invoice plus a little meat for the dealership and you don't need to haggle.

They move a car and make a little money, you have a pain-free transaction and you know you got a decent deal.

Note: Their target price for a manual TDI JSW in my area with no options added is $25,387. (That includes destination)

thanks, but almost no one was buying a SportWagen TDI for under msrp in 2008. The car was in too high demand, and in too short supply. What you see now, and what was happening 3.5+ years ago can not be compared

edit: I just looked at my sticker. MSRP with the $1300 pano roof was $25,540. I paid $26,540 for the privilege of being the second person in my state to own a manual TDI SportWagen after waiting almost 7 months. The dealer was asking $2k over msrp, so I'm quite happy with the fact that I paid only $1k over considering that they most definitely would have sold the car to someone else the next day if I didn't accept their offer. Back then people were calling all around the country and sometimes paying well over msrp just to buy one of these.

And this service didn't even exist in 2008.

But in the future, it doesn't matter what the demand is, if they want to stay on the list of CR dealerships, they have to honor the price. Even now, there is no supply. My car isn't built yet because they couldn't locate a manual Tdi for me. They still honored the price.

I know I probably sound like a commercial but I was dreading the purchasing process but it turned out to be really enjoyable. I went around and drove every car on the list, decided on exactly what I wanted and then just hit the internet. Dealerships would call occasionally and say "I found a silver one" and I"d be like "no, I said no silver". It was interesting because they would all find the same car, so I knew exactly what was out there. I caught one salesman lying when he said a car existed that I knew didn't.

After about 2 weeks I just picked my favorite of the salesmen and put in an order.

I ordered my 2011 and paid $500 under invoice.

Armstrong VW in Portland sent me an email today saying they could sell me one for 500 under invoice, but I had already bought mine. I got it for invoice, and then they through in a roof edge spoiler.

Where is the best place to find out the actual/accurate invoice prices?

  21. 08-15-2012 01:04 PM #21
I got my 2012 JSW white with auto and base MSRP $276xx for $25000+ tax back to early June in Los Angeles CA.

If you need more info just pm me.

Don't forget about the Obama cash for clunkers in 2009. I got it using that program and pretty much any car that was great on mileage was being dumped at MSRP since the program was giving back up to $4500.00 on trade ins that qualified.

invoice isn't exactly what the dealership paid for the car. i got my wife's jsw over $1500 under invoice and my golf i got over $2000 under invoice. it's all about going to a volume dealership that like to move more vehicles off the lot then making too much off the sale.
