T2 Problems with automatic trunk closing and popping open

Hey guys, on our T2 2010 Touareg, when the trunk is open and I press the button to close it, it starts to close, shuts then pops open and stays about 10% open.

I am not sure what could be causing this, there are no obstructions inside or out of the car that would block it from opening/closing properly.

Any ideas what I should look at?

Very first post so I hope it's worth something but I have that issue with my 2012 occasionally. I have the cargo mat in the back and sometimes the mat shifts ever so slightly. The mat shifting causes the door to stop before it latches all the way even though it appears like the mat has enough clearance to the door.
