anywun? i basicially dont want to put in a 8v manifold if im going to have to take it out once i go turbo
i drive a 1989 1.6 n.a. 180k I have recently acquired a manifold from 1.8 8v GTI (motronic cis e i believe) anyway i plan on running vnt turbo on it, and my question is would i be able to do this with this manifold, where would i put the etg meter, i want to put it as close as possible to the engine.
also i read that 1.6 n.a came with 11mm and 12 mm head bolts, and that the 11mms are prone to cracking once turboed esp with the less restrictive 8v manifold , how can i find out what length my bolts are...vin, engine, year perhaps?
the 11mm blocks crack when they have TOO MUCH restriction.. not from breathing too well.
whoever told you that you crack a block from making your engine breath better is full of it..
what VNT are you gonna run? most OEM VW vnts come with a manifold integrated into them..
but i know of no OEM manifolds that a VNT will bolt directly to..
do you have any idea what you are actually doing? and what it takes to do what you want to?
do you have any idea how much work it is to install a VNT and actually have it operate correctly?
ive done quite a few VNT setups on IDI diesels, and they are not a beginner project by any means...
sounds like you need to do ALOT of reading before you do anything to your existing engine..
the first VNT/diesel i built, i ended up blowing the head off the block because i didnt know what i was doing.. i dont want to see you do the same.
youre absolutely right i dont want to blow off my head. pretty sure gathering knowledge is what im doing didnt mean to make it seem like im going to do this tomorow. calm down im not jumping in head first to the shallow end.
im trying to weigh out my options: in a thread you said everything from a 1.9 tdi will swap in besides the intake and oil filter flange. probably will do this after i graduate college
now that i look at it, a toilet bowl manifold would be a sh**** idea to run a turbo on. thanks.
for know ill run it to give it less restriction. my question about the head cracking was about 1.5na and 1.6na with 11mm head bolts cracking after running boost, but now i know what length are mine.
as for the motronic injection system it did also come with an 8v gti, im welding the floors on one as we speak
again thanks for your help glrogar.
motronic ONLY came on 2.0L 16v engines from 90-94(5?)
the only cars to get CIS-Motronic were 90-92 16v GTIs, 90-92 16v GLIs, and 90-95 (or so) 16v passats..
8v GTIs NEVER EVER GOT MOTRONIC injection from the factory. if your 8v has motronic, someone put it there..
do you know the difference between CIS-Electronic, and CIS-Motronic?
CIS-E, and CIS-M look identical, if you dont know the difference..
Your best bet is to get all the OEM turbo parts. I.E. turbo, oil lines, oil pan (not necessary but will make things easier), oil filter housing (or tap your current housing), and intake/exhaust manifolds.
I have an N/A engine with a tiny K14 turbo and N/A fueling w/ 155bar injectors. this thing is fun as hell! I've beat on it pretty hard and haven't had any internal problems (managed to rattle a lot of bolts out of the engine/brackets though ).
If you do a headgasket at the time of the turbo, I would feel pretty confident about it holding together nicely. Mine has seen absolute hell and never fails to take me to where ever i need to be.
