Can I use (fully functional) a 3.2 DSG airbag on a 2000 TT. I have an alcantara steering wheel that use the small TT airbag, not the one that the audi tt 2000-01 have.

    Thanks

I have a 2005 alcantara wheel and bag in my 2001. Yes, 2000-2001 have the larger bags/wheels. so, answer "most likely" yes. You will need the harness (about $50 from the dealer) that attaches to the rear of the 3.2 airbag to connect your the 2000 harness so your TT knows the airbag is connected. the harnes from you 2000 airbag will not disconnect from the 2000 so it cannot be attached to the 3.2.

Just to understand, i need an additional harness that will go between the original harness and the airbag? Like an extension? Or this new harness will replace the original one? Do you have the item no of the harness?

sorry if I wasn't clear. If you have the original harness that goes to the 3.2 bag, you should be good to go. As I recall, one end attaches to the back-center of the bag and at the other end are two connections: one for horn and one for the actual airbag (clockspring).

I did not have that harness so I need to buy a new one because the guy I bought the wheel and bag from used the harnes to adapt his new wheel to his TT.

edit: here's a link to a harness on ebay showing the two connector ends. big yellow attaches to TT steering column where your oem disconnected. little one in foam is horn. other is airbag.

    Word of caution:

BEFORE CONNECTING THE AIRBAG WIRES, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY! BUT THAT NOT THE CAUTIONARY PART. HERE'S THE CAUTIONARY PART: RECONNECT THE BATTERY AS THE VERY LAST STEP.

    Basic steps are:
    1. DISCONNECT BATTERY
    2. DISCONNECT OLD AIR BAG
    3. CONNECT NEW AIR BAG
    4. TURN IGNITION TO ON POSITION.
    5. GET YOUR ASS OUT OF THE CAR
    6. NOW, RECONNECT BATTERY

why this process you ask...so they new airbag doesn't blow up in your face when you start the car for the first time should you have a short or some other electrical issue.

    cheers.

Lol, no! I know that process. Also, no. The airbag has no harness. A friend bough the wheel and airbag for an A4 B5. We never connected the airbag.

The ebay one looks like the one I got from the dealer.

When I was orginally shopping for mine, I dropped by my local dealer and the parts guy said they "need the VIN for the TT the air bag came from" to ensure the proper harness. I'm thinking, WTF. My indy guy thought that was kind of silly too, but, we still need a VIN so we use the VIN from one of his other customers. Worked fine. Obviously, VIN from donor car is NOT really required as I have airbag from euro QS TT (2005) and harness from US TT (2005) in US TT (2001).

If you're going to get the ebay one, try to determine from that pic if the blue/yellow connector will fit the hole in the center of your airbag. If not, you'd probably be better off getting a 3.2 harness directly from the dealer. If the plug fits, you should not have any problems.

    cheers.

Shouldn't be an issue if you take extreme level precautions to prevent spark, but I'd think it'd take a pretty big spark to set it off.
    rubber gloves
    rubber handled tools
    rubber soled shoes
maybe work on a rubber mat
    ground yourself before beginning work...

you know, that kind of stuff.

    cheers.
